Microsoft Surface Duo to have an 'app group' feature to help with multitasking

27 June 2020
You'll be able to have pre-set app pairs (like Samsung calls its own take on it) to open on the Duo's two screens.

I've had the Z Flip for 3-4 months now and it looks as new. My Note 9 started getting cracks after a few weeks, because glass screens are fragile no matter what.

What I CAN DO, that you can't do with your dinosaur phone is, I can fold it up and fit it EASILY in any pocket. ANY POCKET. That's something I bet you miss being able to do with your crappy old school candy bar phone.

Furthermore when those phones are setup for the first time they show you a list of warnings making it clear the screen will get damaged at the slightest provocation.

So those are fake too?? LOL.

Glass break when you drop it. It doesn't matter if the glass is half a millimeter or a tenth of a millimeter thick. If you don't believe me you can have a look at my Galaxy Note 9 with cracks on front and rear.

Trying to sell this DOA device by lying about the competition won't work.

And this device brings that along with a proven durable screen tech.

Foldable screens can eventually do the same BUT as long as you can damage a screen with your bare fingernails the tech is simply not ready yet. No wonder samsung is offering cheap screen replacements and for the same reason the fold didn't see big sales of any kind.

So if you think this device will fail because it's not a replacement of a foldable screen phone I would disgree, it can multitask and that's what is aimed for, as before, to me it will fail because it's not practical as a phone, that will drive away more potential buyers than anything else. And yes where are the great cameras, better has something good hidden in the bezels.

AnonD-762416, 30 Jun 2020Big workstations has multiple monitors simply because three... moreGalaxy Fold is likely much much more expensive, has a plastic screen, cant use stylus, is thicker, more fragile. There are a lot of things that the Duo does better, depending on what you prefer in a phone.

I mean comparing to the LG dual screen solution to the finish of the Duo just seem strange, its obvious that the finish of the Duo is miles ahead in all aspects.

The quote was compared to large screen phones that are not foldable, co pared to those multitasking with two apps side by side is obviiusky superior on a dual screen. To your second point that smaller is better because it is supposed to go in your pocket, well those big screens that cant be folded is harder to get in your pocket.

For dual screen vs foldable screen, the latter is to prefer if they offer the same experience. The existing ones are so fragile and the feel is not as good as a real glass screen that the Duo will offer.

Why even bother commenting on a article about a device you believe to be doa? For me personally this device seemingly offer something that would help my workflow and that I cant get elsewhere. But I dont think anyone, including Microsoft, expect this device to show huge sale numbers. Its a niche product and everyone knows it. More niche phones is great for us consumers as more people can find the perfect phone forthemselves, I would never go on arant against all the phones that doesnt fit my needs, I just dont buy them...

Your accounts doesn't need more convincing than that. Also, you can't buy any triple-ultrawide monitors.
Look at the Galaxy Fold and look at the split screen above. The Galaxy Fold can do EVERYTHING the Microsoft device can do, because the OS can create a hard split anywhere you want on that 4:3 display. The Galaxy Fold can also do everything a small tablet can do, because the screen doesn't have a thick useless split going straight through the middle.

It's DOA. Anyone neither understanding this or agreeing to this has never considered spending their own hard earned money on it and thought on the obvious trade-off with trying to make two small displays work as well as one single, double sized, display.

LG were first out with these kind of devices and I am pretty sure they're not selling like hot cakes, because consumers realize there is little point to the form factor on a phone.

How... moreI absolutely see a better multitasking experience in two small screens rather than one, big workstations have multiple monitors too. In this device you could have a keyboard in one window and a document open in the other one, browsing in one screen and taking notes in the other. Makes perfect sense.

The awkward part is actually using this device mostly as a phone and likely the reason it will fail, it's simply not practical or comfortable to use for normal phone users.

How do you use your computer? Do you always only run one app per screen?

The questioning of the claim is obvious. Where's the advantage with running one app per screen? This isn't 1985. We have more advanced operating systems. Software can figure out how to let multiple apps share one physical screen.

The reality is, one screen is better for multitasking than splitting it into two screens, as you get the freedom to decide exactly how much real estate one app needs or gets. Be it a pop up window, a 50/50 split or anything in between those.

Using a device with two screens on a hinge is a half measure and it's a bad half measure when you actively buy that device without thinking of the obvious limitations it comes with.

We have folding glass technology today. The Microsoft solution would have been great in an era when that didn't exist.

If you want another obvious downside with having two physical screens to pose as one device, there is the colour calibration issue. Two separate screens will never have the same characteristics, even if they'd be hand picked and individually calibrated.

This Microsoft device is as DOA as Huawei's folding device. It just doesn't serve a genuine or practical purpose.

I do however stand by my longer term stance, that I hope this Microsoft venture is just a long-term strategy to get manufacturers onboard a complete fork of Android out of Google's consumer hostile cartel they call the Open Handset Alliance.
