Does your phone turn into a tablet?

Sort by:

This is indeed one of the phone that requires show off if you have tons of money. Nothing else. For average poor Joe we can use Apple & Samsung mobiles without any shame. That works for most of us

Having used my Mate Xs for 2 months now here are some thoughts:
There is no point folding into tablet mode cause most of the apps dont scale/screen adjust when you switch modes. You are left with huge black edges and often apps even crash when you fold it when certain apps are open. Most of the time I use this unfolded, which defeats the purpose of this device. Huawei store is poor, so I had to rely on apk-s and amazon appstore. Even then everyday apps I truly use are missing like the gym, taxi ordering, gov apps etc. When I go this phone I thought it will replace my 2 devices (s8 + ipad) with 1 device, but I was wrong. I am still carrying my s8 around with me. Battery life and performance is good on this phone. Also this phone is very bulky and heavy, I usually have to keep it in a pack bag cause I cant fit it into my pockets. Only thing I am glad about this phone is reading manga when commuting. Seriously, please dont buy this phone. You cant use this phone without making a huawei ID. The camera is bad, the colors are often times outblown (specially reds and greens) or just colorless grey. Apps like facebook etc dont know how to use the phones wide angle lense or telephoto, so you have to always use the camera app and then upload your picture. Only things this phone is good for is reading manga, but beware if you are reading something 18+, people will notice. Summary: app scaling with screen terrible, performance good, camera terrible, security and privacy terrible, app support terrible, battery life good. Also forgot to mention: experience using the back side cameras for selfie video is horrible, the phone dosent understand when you switch sides.

LG Superfan, 06 Jul 2020If I were to get a phone turn into a tablet it would be App... moreWhy not MacOS, Linux or Windows (not that silly window phones tile scheme instead of the prior windows 8 functional desktop experience)?

We should have $200 tablet phones for a long time. This industry.

I did design studies decade before last, into best possible design. But people are stupid. Inward fold designs are fanciful and this obsession to get 'it' has held us back for many years. A large fold diameter mechanism was the solution, but it adds design complexcity and vulnerability to avoid the gap when open and protect the fold closed. You also then don't have a screen face exposed during pocket phase for quick use. So, it had limited usefulness, outside of stupid fashion victims use.

The outward fold allows: for a less refined technology to use the larger fold diameter; for instant access and visibility folded; folds even into very narrow size; and most important the horizontal fold allows the best form factors to hold and pocket.

Folded horizontally, it goes from a normal phone size and shape to a 6-8+ inch normal practical tablet shape. What matters is rather simple, usability, regularity and size of text on screen along the longest edge for viewing webpages and documents. Once you upsize, even vertical use has a minimal usable text size. All these odd form factors are not just limitations from inside folds, but trying too hard for the ideals and to desperately present something difference looking in a market to used to regular shapes. We see the same with phones going multiple colors, graded colors and metallic and colour changes, as interests stagnates. In this case, would you pay such great prices, like a greatly overpriced laptop, for a normal looking phone folded, like normal phones 10-25 times less in price?

These form factors make desktop modes and browsing practical, on phones which could start at $200. Time for Microsoft to re-enter that market (with something more like a Windows 7.x) and dump the left over Windows 8 stuff. Imagine the next 300 million+ windows sales being like this, into the third business government infrastructure too to maintain and increase market (android infrastructure can literally cap and displace future sales into the space. It literally has been android who has stopped this from happening, but Google is a lot bigger company, and could send MS broke if they wanted to get serious. The space android/chrome os competes in, is still vital to MS to compete in, to prepare for the future expansion and encroachment into their markets. They could effectively even offer an android compatible system (an android player that puts regular android into program sandboxes, to run a regular android license) with a partner like Amazon, but spyware free with Amazon shopping app, and other commissioned apps.

daredevil, 06 Jul 2020Wanna bet?I love this phone/tablet, I have a spinal injury and my Huawei Mate P20 Pro is the best phone I have ever had and I have to use a laptop also. To have something that does both without all the weight of carrying 2 gadgets around would be so much easier for people with disabilities. I am not sure how good it is but for me I would have 1 tomorrow if I could afford it because I know what my phone can do and if it can do exactly as my phone can but whilst having a bigger screen is all disabled people could want

I just love innovation. In all honesty, I have heard lots of people saying the Galaxy Fold looks great in person. I believe it but at the same time, If I owned one, every time I close it I think I would really hate it. That external screen just does not sit well with me at all. Its just "REALLY" an eye-sore (Actually reminds me of the Nokia Communicator 9300/9500. I just love the design (form-factor) of the existing Huawei's foldables, same as I love the Xiaomi concept fold that has not been seen since it was shown by Xiaomi a while ago. I would love to have this Mate X/Xs. I am certain I would really enjoy it. Just my opinion though!
