Flashback: the phone that was a tablet that was a laptop that failed

12 July 2020
Asus built the only computing device that you would ever need - with a selection of docks, it could transform into every form factor you might need.

I used to have an Asus Padphone and really loved it! The syncing of data is always a pain in the a***.... You could read comfortably on the big screen while sitting in the bus/train, then stow the big screen and continue on the phone while walking to your next destination. Phone always fully charged because the big screen battery was great!
Alas, I once broke thr big screen, and the phone is now leading a quite life in my drawer...
If I had a modern version I would definitely buy it again!

I rather use 2 separate devices than 1 device. I could have 1 independent smartphone, 1 independent tablet, and have them sync, e.g. google accounts, google drive, google photo, etc.

Asus Transformer Book V didn't succeed because Google and Microsoft said you cant have dual boot and thus cannot launch the device.
The problem was not about the combo, it was about the companies not allowing this kind of design.
There never was a way for a normal consumer to buy the Asus Transformer Book V.

Also with modern CPU and GPU power + slimmer and better design and batteries the design could succeed if the software would be even on a decent level.

I've been looking for a few days if there is any way to re-do this Asus idea with up-to-date hardware. There are a few possibles ways such as a type-c external monitor with built-in battery but those are 15.4"
I feel like there REALLY should be a kickstarter idea for this smartphone-powered tablet

i think it was and still is an amazing concept
The problem (back then) was the software and the hardware were not up to it
i hope Asus or Samsung will rekindle this concept again

I always loved this concept. My first Android was actually the Motorola Atrix (with the Multimedia dock instead of the Laptop), and I also fell in love with the Padfone, however it was not available anywhere near me.
But all those early attempts at converging our devices were full of compromises, even if your intended use was very light.

I got my money's worth on the Atrix, I used it for watching movies with and without the dock, I took it for work and I even threw a PowerPoint presentation with it, I took notes with an external keyboard, and I even played some games on a TV via emulation and using BT controllers... But today I need my Laptop / Tablet to be a powerful device and even though phones are becoming almost as powerful as an ultraportable laptop, companies don't take risk today with these hybrid devices.

I currently have a Surface Book which I use for everything, and an Xperia XZ phone. And this setup is going to be my main setup for a while. I am planning to upgrade both to their respective successors.

Omg! I remember opening both the Padfone 2, and Padfone Infinity. The last one was just amazing!

I had 2 Padfone transformers. What made me give both up was the phone screen: it was a pure plastic feel. Oh, and the plug on one of the phones broke easily .
I switched to Asus TF300TG which i still use to this day only as an ebook reader... thanks to Asus not caring long term about their devices...and deleting the unlocker fro. Their support page...

The worst part in ALL ASUS PRODUCTS is their low quality product service and longetivity support for their devices...at least on Android they roll them updates for max 2 years.
Thus forcing the users to "throw away" their gadgets for newer models... and we complain about pollution, ey?

The key feature seems to be the mini VGA port. If this were present in today's phones you could also have a pocket PC that connects to external monitor, with keyboard + mouse via Bluetooth.

There where great devices looking for extend the usability of smartphones. Tablets always be something weird, they give you better screen size and portability but nobody wants to carry a smartphone and tablet also... There is a new product coming from a innovative company that will change the way we use smartphones , tablets, smart tv.....

i had asus padfone. it was truly an amazing device in its time. especially when I turned it into a tablet and talked with a pen, people were looking at it with curiosity. it is very sad that it does not spread and continues.

I would love a windows 10 tablet/laptop with android integration that can also i tegrate your phone into it. Don't expect android only for this concept to succeed. You need windows 10 and android combination for it to work.

This is what I plan when I buy a windows 10 tablet/laptop hybrid and use android emulator so I can use both systems at the same time. Of course specs should be good enough for this to work well.

                                        Too small for a tablet.

Impossible to hold with one hand when open, screen too small when folded.
                                        Ridiculous notch and obscene price.
Costs more than S6 Tab + S20 combined.
                                        Not even counting screen issues.
Fold 2 will be about $2500.
