Weekly poll: does 100W+ charging matter?

19 July 2020
At what point does this race stop making sense?

Sort by:

I don't even use the decent 9V, 1.6a charger that came with my samsung S8+. See, if one is outside, most people will simply bring a power bank than a charger because most high end phones have small batteries.
If I would have to guess, a minimum of 4500-5000mah capacity will start to matter charging speeds to most people since at this spec, less people will bring a power bank

0-100% in just 2 minutes is the winner. Imagine charging the phone for about 100 times and there goes boom boom boom

Someone buying apple products knows what they want, someone buying a asus, oneplus, oppo, etc are buying them for their specific reasons.
Just because you like fast charge doesn’t mean others have to

Meanwhile iphones have one of the best batteries out there and most people already have ipad chargers or mac chargers or any other charger lol. So you are crying about the charging brick for a phone that doesn't interest you and you can't afford.
Good try. Apple is worth 1.705TRILLION today. More than many countries lol

If manufacturers can do this type of tech, wouldn't it be nice for them to give users what type of charges they want with their phone instead of 100W or nothing? Some companies like Sony or Apple gives users the option to stop a device from charging more than 80 percent overnight and have it up to full charge depending on the user's use case.

I am all for speed for chargers, but I would also like some more options when it comes to charging speeds. Perhaps there could be something like a 100w 30w or a 5w charge overnight type, but then again, smartphone batteries will eventually deteriorate anyway.

How often do you need ultra-fast charging? I personally have my phone charging while sleeping and the only time I need the ultra-fast charging would be at the airport, and only on very long flights.

But ultra-fast charging shortens the life of the battery and is more likely to cause safety issues:

"The battery is an electrochemical device that can only absorb a given amount of energy. Charging Li-ion occurs by intercalation of lithium ions and electrons on the electrodes. Trying to push more energy into Li-ion than it can effectively absorb creates an over-feed condition. Metallic lithium builds up on the anode, resulting in lithium plating that forms dendrites which compromises safety and shortens battery life. The same symptoms also occur when charging Li-ion at cold temperatures when the intercalation is slowed."

I use my phone as 4G modem for my PC at night, through USB tethering. As during the plugged session the phone continues to charge (slowly), I actually would rather start at about 60% rather than 90% so that there would be a few hours before it reaches 100%, at which point it would be bad to have it kept plugged. So having a really fast charger sort of runs counter to my need.

To me 30W is sufficient for 4000-5000mah batteries. If OEMs want to release 100-150W fast charger, they should also include option to select charging speed. My Samsung A50 supports 15W fast charge. But i use it only in emergency. Otherwise i disable fast charge & charge my phone over night at 10W.
But one of my friend using a chinese brand which came with a 30W charger & there is no option to disable fast charge. So OEMs should add options to choose charging speed like (120W- lighting fast, 60W- Ultra fast, 30W- Very fast, 15W- fast, 10W- standard). So people can switch their gear according to their need.

                        Well faster charging matters.
Look at apple still using 5V/1A chargers which will be excluded in upcomming phones and still have a battery problems just to reduce the costs as much as possible.
Rather will have a charger which in 10-15 minutes tops my battery from zero to full than waiting many hours to charge 20% of the phone capacity.
Imagine how long it will take with apple charge to charge a ROG2 or ROG3 phone which hav e 6000 mAh battery.

I used AccA (https://github.com/MatteCarra/AccA) to monitor my battery and set a termination voltage, but I believe it can also show you the factory settings.
Even though I set a lower battery voltage with AccA, android still showed 100% when the limit was reached, even though the actual capacity was lower than factory.

On my Pixel, the default charging strategy seems to be: charge until 4394mV, let the battery discharge until 4350mV - so about 1%. Maybe with the screen off or during night times, the controller allows the battery to self-discharge even more, I haven't run extensive tests.
