Huawei P40 series' latest update enhances the front cameras

20 July 2020
Applies July 2020 security patch as well.

Hopefully the latest EMUI update works better on this device than mine. I just lost split screen. Honestly Huawei, your software never was stellar, but lack of testing pre-rollout is a bit of a joke

Kevin, 22 Jul 2020This got to be the most ridiculous comment ive ever seen wh... moreBecause you failed to understand it.
I literally explained how punch holes IN GENERAL are what cause smartphones to have less sensors, I also explained how 3D facial recognition could be made better with ADDITIONAL sensors.
And what you also failed to understand is that the punch holes AND notches both have ridiculous and totally stupid negative aspects and are what many peoples want to get rid of, and a thin bezel like the Nubia Play is way better (I don't know why you'd immediately talk about big bezel ?), hell even the Samsung S8/S9 bezel is more than acceptable and is actually full of good and useful sensors, a pop up camera is even better.

That front punch hole cut out is for sensor and camera hence why it's massive. That's the only solution to get away with notch or big bezel in front

Anonymous, 21 Jul 2020I’m not an Huawei fan, but Huawei knows how to use that pun... moreLets make it clear, there are MULTIPLE issues with the punch holes, and YES it is ugly, if I literally drill a hole in your face, would you consider it NOT ugly ?

First, those horror make you loose PRECIOUS space for notification and status icons, here is screenshots showing how those useless punch hole and notch destroy the Android notification and status bar :
        https://imgur.com/a/fu4qLmE

Seconds, that's BECAUSE of those things, that normalize getting rid of ALL sensors but the camera (and uselessly putting ambiant light and proximity sensor underdisplay, causing them to be way less effective and more expensive) that 3D facial recognition isn't more widely adopted.

Third, the whole concept to REMOVE a part of the display to archive FULLSCREEN is as stupid as it can get, putting sensors under the display is the only more stupid idea they come up with which is a direct cause of those.

Also, you don't seem to know how facial recognition work...
Samsung used Iris Scanner, which basically is a camera sensitive to near infrared and an infrared floodlight, which helped reveal quite unique patterns in the eyes.
And it work quite well, it is anyway way better than 2D facial recognition.

3D facial recognition can be archive using :
*Two camera working in stereoscopy, which is the oldest and simplest method, which work quite well, but the camera need to be further enough appart for that to work.
*Using a projector outputting a specific repeated/known pattern, which, with the relief of the object you look at, will give out depth informations, it is a powerful method and is basically what Apple Face ID have, along with other phones like the Pixel 4 and 4XL, Mate 20 and 30, Oppo Find X etc, have.
*Then you can use ToF (Time of Flight) sensor which work the same as a radar/sonar by impulsing an IR flash and basically record at extremely fast speed against which pixels the bouncing light get back, and by having the time it took you can know the distance, meaning you can do a 3D map.

The Huawei P40 basically have a ToF sensor, which by itself isn't that bad for 3D facial recognition, it is quite good, the issue is, with dot projector and their IR camera we now have algorithms that can detect real living cells from other materials, which is way superior to ToF alone.
If you want a GREAT and SECURE experience, the solution is simple :
        1) Put 2 regular camera (normal or portrait and (ultra)wide) 2 IR camera, 1 UV camera and a dot projector matrix.
Use your (ultra)wide camera to detect all faces on the scene and perform a really basic and super fast face recognition to tell which face match the user, if multiple match (as you use a simplified recognition algorithm here) run it again on a slightly increased complexity, do it until the best matching face is found.
Now, use both camera to make a basic stereoscopy 3D image while one of your IR camera act as a ToF sensor by recording on a superfast memory the IR timing, it take near no time, less than a microsecond as this distance, so immediately after, power on your dot projector.
Now you have 2 IR camera looking at it, but rather than looking at a simple fixed dot pattern, the dot projector is on gimbals and really quickly scan your face while blinking really fast, what you got here is a super accurate measurement of the face, down the the tiniest details, most 3D printing can fake it because of the aliasing effect that the scan will be able to reveal.
In the meantime you also gather an UV image of the face which have unique details that visible and IR doesn't reveal.
Once you got all that, rather than stupidly feed all those private data into the OS who is connected to internet, you feed it to a specially made chip whose goal is to handle biometrics and security in general, this chip have specialized instructions to handle this work, making it quite faster, but also more reliable because it is specialized and can give much more precise result for a given time than what a regular ARM can.
Now, you work your way from face feature detection, partial face detection and maybe up to full face detection, then you compare the data and with a good AI you make sure your face is correctly matching the original model + room for facial expression and the data collected through time by all the performed unlocks to handle changes (tan, scars, makeup, etc) and blocking objects (mask, sunglasses, piercings, tattoos, bandages, etc).
Once the chip got what it look at, then deeper comparison will be done, all details only visible through UV if they are available (sunscreen and makeup affect those), same with visible and NIR light details, then, because why not, you also look into the eyes and also perform Iris/eyes scanning, because after all it only require an IR camera and its floodlight that you already have.
Then, based on how much the face match the original model, you give a security score that the OS will use as a GENERIC security handler, meaning EVERY APPS will work with EVERY security methods, which allow the user to use whatever he prefer (fingerprint, 3D facial recognition, pattern, password) for any apps rather than being forced by the app maker, then, depending now the user preferences and the security level he wish (like low security to access calendar app, medium to access the browser, high for email and social network, and super high for all confidential informations like bank and legal ones) without anyone being able to gather any of those data.
With that you can easily allow multiple users with different profiles :
        Admin, Other users, friends, strangers.
Which limit what is possible for temporary users, you can also put some facial expression recognition, like it only unlock if you pull out the tang or wink, or on the opposite, lock the phone for X set amount of time if you do something else, like showing your teeth or squint.
Which would be handful for avoiding surprise unlock or fight forced unlock.

THAT is a proper 3D face unlock.
Meanwhile, a bezel or pop up camera would also allow Huawei to have the ToF sensor AND not destroying the display at the same time, added bonus of the pop up is the privacy gain which is more important than any other feature a smartphone can offer.
