When they switched to fully custom cores that they had to design from scratch they fell behind. Because they were large powerful cores. And being newly designed were inefficient.
This was after Qualcomm had started making large strides towards efficiency finally. This made the gap even bigger.
Worse off was the team working on the custom cores and soc...or whoever made the scheduler and what not were clearly rushed and forced to chase benchmark numbers over logic and efficiency.
So even with the new mali which is very powerful and could have been used in a much better set up was all set up to fail.
Even worse yet is despite the two generations not doing the best the 3rd and 4th gen cores would have seen great strides in design, power, and efficiency. But the corporate morons that pushed for inefficient benchmark numbers didn't understand that and shut the whole division down even though it had been successful all that time prior.
Even apple struggled with poor efficiency and heavy throttling the first couple years of designing large custom cores.
And Qualcomm had their s810 fiasco that set them back to quad core for the s825 the next year.

In the exact same boat as others, won't touch this phone if its got a exynos 990 in it. Better hope its just being kept really well under wraps and its really going to be a 992 chip........
Otherwise I'll be jumping on a 865 or 865+ variant phone or wait it out till next year for a 875.
Samsung is gearing up to have this phone do very poorly internationally..... sub-par flag ship this late in the year.

We all were but disappointed to see Exynos 990 again.
First time in a decade, I'll be keeping flasghip for more than a year.
Will wait for the S21 if they make improvements or any other SD875 phone.

I hope this is a clever marketing tactic of Samsung !? There is a lot of talk about the 990 processor, and at the presentation they will announce ..., and people will buy the N20U as if it were bread, even though the price will be higher than the S20U.

This year I intend to change my NOTE8. But if they really decided to use the Exynos 990 instead of 992, then I will look for something else. If they continue with this compromises year after year for what used to be the real flagship, then they can just drop the NOTE line completely.

Main reason might be for own house fabrication. This is what holding them back too.
It's a simple logic. If AMD had better design than Intel then AMD's regular 4-8 core CPU would have been 2-3 times faster considering the 4 year fabrication advantage(7nm vs 14nm).
But that's not the case. Intel is better in some ways and AMD is better in other.
This is happening because Intel's design is very good, They just need a good fabrication now.
That's why I was talking about taking help from Samsung/TSMC.
