They went the route of large speakers, big battery, and fast screen. Their issues was that they had no experience in this market, but it was a valiant first effort. So much so that, it was them that created the category of "gaming phones".

I mean take the 2018 Razer Phone 2 with the 2019 JungleCat controller, and compare it to 2016 devices. The closest competitors are ZTE Axon 7, Samsung S7+, and iPhone 6S+. But none of them have a POCKETABLE controller. What happened to Razer? They gave up, no more phones after the Razer Phone 2.

ASUS somewhat gave an F, because they did processor binning and got the good variants of QSD SoCs... and they offered some nice accessories. What about ASUS? Well, they're increasing prices, killing the headphone jack, and still not committed to a good software solution.

Nvidia also gave an F because they had the Tegra Zone, where games were made optimised for their processors. And they're at the forefront of Over-the-Air and Cloud Gaming, as well as other innovations. How about Nvidia, where are they now? They're mostly focused on AndroidTV these days.

...so yeah, this could be a great market. But none of the corporations want to go that route. Too bad they don't have someone like Steve Jobs, or enthusiasts (incl. me) making the decisions.

This potential of gaming phone has been around for more than three years and no one gives a f*ck about it.

s3xy, 02 Aug 2020Sony PSP and PlayStation Vita never did sh*t on the market ... moreI mainly use Mobile Apps, don't really game often. But there are some neat titles from Minecraft, Fortnite, CoD, Real Racing, etc etc. And even more polished/more powerful games on the iOS platform. I'm not saying that's enough, but that the POTENTIAL is there.

As I said before, that was why the original Nvidia Shield suffered: ahead of it's time.

I beg to differ on the impact made by the PSP and PS Vita. The simplest explanation for the Vita's market performance was that it was abandoned by Sony pretty much One Year after release, it never gained the exclusives we were waiting for, proper back-catalogue, and had proprietary storage shortages for third-party titles. Nintendo handhelds have usually neglected 3D gaming or having decent graphics, which is finally changed with the Nintendo Switch.

Now everyone is carrying a pocketable handheld console. The market is there. The demand in China is huge. What's missing are pocketable controllers (except JungleCat) and the 3D Games. That is going to come sooner or later. I mean people scoffed at the portable computers (laptops) when they debuted, just like you're scoffing at pocketable gaming.

Where are the great games for gaming phones?

Just look at the evolution from the Atari Lynx, Sega GameGear, Nintendo Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch.

The key to winning in this segment are (most to least important):
Marketing, Exclusive Games, Price, Comfort, Battery Life, Graphics, Availability, Features.

...for instance, the Nvidia Shield Handheld was a great portable console, even to this day seems to hold its own. But it was lacking in games, no marketing, doomed it to failure. What we really need is a great phone, none of these lacklustre flagships or flashy gamer phones, and for it to be a comfortable and pocketable console. The closest to that is the Razer Phone 2 (best speakers, 120Hz screen) and the actually pocketable JungleCat controller. Although they really need to release a Razer Phone 3 with improved ergonomics, refreshed specifications, massive battery life boost, user removable battery, headphone jack, etc etc to be Gaming Friendly.

These gaming phones are really innovating these days. I wonder if they will some day replace consols.

Yeah. A Chinese manufacturer. With issues selling into countries.
Having a special router with special modes, which is a major security bypass device, where you can strip and hide information on security breeches before it gets to your software, also a device connected to your TV which can sense what you watch, local devices and traffic activations, and may even have a TV camera, and definitely has a speaker which can be used as microphones, and if you are really good, you can hack the TV to use the display to generate a basic camera image (think how the reverse speaker hack works) but might be less useful then generating an ultrasonic image from the speaker mic.

                What could possibly happen?

An android game like Pubg runs fine 4k at 144hz on the Adreno 650.

Cannot beat a gaming PC setup anyway. The price of that nubia gets you a decent gaming setup. You won't need knock-off already cheap Geforce GTX 1050 with that money. It may also get you a second hand gaming laptop.

The problem is that the latest mainstream TVs are still on 60hz. The only TVs that can do 4K at 144hz is the ones running on Nvidia's G-Sync Ultimate and they cost way more than the normal ones.
