Did they just SERIOUSLY and REALLY marketed a year old tech everyone take for granted (because it is) and is on basically every phones with an Oled display, as if it was the new latest innovation ?

Also, reducing the number of active pixels, so dafuq is that long line in the center that is basically useless ?
And why didn't they improve the number of notification icons ?
Literally that's the sole purpose of AOD, showing notifications (and secondarily, time of day) without having to interact with the phone, but 4 icons or 3 and a "+" is the best they can do ?
Waw, and I thought I couldn't have been more disappointed by OnePlus, guess they are full of surprises...

CompactPhones5ever, 06 Aug 2020No kidding, OnePlus has one of the most pathetic advertisin... moreWhy does it bother you so much? Does it affect your life?

overhype again when it's just a simple update

They must be stuck for ideas if this is the highlight

I still don't get the difference between Ambient Display and Always on Display. Aside from not being able to keep it on like AOD, it does the same thing. At least that is what I remember when I has the OnePlus 7 pro.

Anonymous, 06 Aug 2020Only oneplus can pretend they’re inventing an extremely old... moreWhere did they say anything about inventing this never-seen before feature? AFAIK, they constantly ask people on Twitter about features that they would like to see. AOD was a huge hit regarding this, so now they are making their version. End of story.

Oliver151, 06 Aug 2020Just like apple does with its 5 years old bullshit features ))) You have to take a closer look and I'm not defending Apple here. When they announce features which were available on other phones for quite some time they don't claim they invented it. They say it's new on iPhone. But I can see why people misunderstand it. Apple knows how to play with words and a lot of people eat it and even misunderstand things.

In a way you're right but every other OEM is to blame as well. I mean Blackberry, Nokia and Palm handsets had features which now every other OEM tries to sell as a new innovation.

oh my god this is even more pretentious than Apple's advertising. its just an AOD no matter what they do they'll still be behind something like Moto Peek

Anonymous, 06 Aug 2020Only oneplus can pretend they’re inventing an extremely old... moreNo kidding, OnePlus has one of the most pathetic advertising of all smartphone manufacturers. It's always some kind of "the box is so sturdy you can step on it with two people", "we got some extremelly expensive designers to design our cases" or "we were inspired by some greek mythology to bring our customers a best possible logo for our new TV because that's what everyone wants, a symetric logo inspired by some greek god" (and I'm not making this up: https://www.gsmarena.com/oneplus_tv_naming_and_logo_announced-news-38671.php)

It's a serious shame how they started as a tech enthusiast company and degenerated into this full-marketing oriented trash. A real 180° turn.

I Hope it has a brightness setting, as most phones with always on display are so bright.

"Jake could you do the AOD? Just take the stock android function, it's good enough so no reason to fix what's not broken, just throw in some kind of design to spice it up"
                          "Alright gimme a moment"

                          OnePlus:

Oh and make a mini documentary about it since there's already so much money in it, with professional models that will act like they're witnessing a greatest achievement of humankind. Money is no objection, customers are always glad to pay our advertisement costs! :^)"
