Ok so how am I suppose to pay if I for example had a Huawei or other non-Google compliant phone? If the Play store system is the ONLY WAY TO PAY? That is stupid that is forcing Epic to make 2 versions of the SAME GAME it should not be required unless Google is willing to pay the EPIC employees extra for having to do twice the work? Oh and side-loading has earned some Japanese companies a bunch of money from me, I have bought over 50K in HARO chips for Gundam Battles Gunpla Warfare and that game cannot be obtained in my region at all...

What you people want are alternatives to the AppStore so you can download pirated apps for free. This is the bottom line really.

This exactly why the Playstore is actually ripping off the developers. They’re charging fees but cannot guarantee exclusivity or protection of their products since side loading is rampant. People are free to upload APKs at third party stores and tweak it so developers do not get a single cent. Android condoned this piracy culture. Great example is allowing torrenting apps.

Apple argues that charging fees and not allowing third party stores to their platform are in the interests of both developers and customers. This is actually true and Apple is absolutely right to do this.

I think both Apple and Google are somewhat right, they need money in exchange for their service, but maybe 30% is too much.

First of all spending money on a app that may vanish(like Fortnite just did) is not exactly very tempting... A reliable service is needed and if apps just keeps poofing without a proper refund policy there is no way people will be very tempted to spend more money. (oh and I recall a few shows and movies was lost forever in the app store due to licence deal those people have yet to get their cash back right?)

ASUS ROG Phone 3, 15 Aug 2020You are telling the story upside down! If developers don’t ... moreLMFAO....nope IOS is a mature and a massive market filled with customers willing to spend money. Your analogy is flawed. The market is already created and it is huge. Your examples didn’t have the same clout as Apple have now.

Developing on iOS will soon expose them to MacOS users along with TvOS and watchOS. These are potential additional revenue sources for developers. This cannot be replicated by Android again due to fragmentation. Developers aim is after all to make money.

Apple holds all the aces here. Developers cannot afford to miss out on Apples market, especially since iOS customers actually pay money on apps and not pirate them from third party sources like millions of android users who cannot afford to spend. Why would they spend money on their cheap devices?

Developers make more on iOS that’s a fact, so why would they abandon the platform?

Google is open source and iOS is not. That itself is a massive distinction. People need to stop making iOS behave and act like Android.

If developers don’t support the platform, it would meet the same end like Blackberry, Symbion, Sailfish, Windows Mobile! I understand Google does sometime for Android since they don’t charge for the mobile phone. But Apple charges right, left , centre for owning the iPhones, for developers to access their App Store in addition to that 30% margin without hosting app developers server data farm, sharing development cost, business risks, SLAs etc is something more than highway robbery

Just lo... moreThey still have a monopoly with the app-store its harder to trash Google here since they at the very least with Android allow customers of their products to go outside their walls to get the things they want, Apple needs to make it easier for their customers to get other sources for apps. The app store has problems not everything is there, some things are even region locked if they were and worse yet due to Apples harsh regulation many apps needed in certain countries cannot be used. Lets say you have a company, you need your employees to install a app that registers them leaving and entering the building or maybe some security to make sure the right person actually enters? Do you know how difficult that is for a company to get approved by Apple? Smaller companies can only go to Android since they do not even need to talk to Google to have their app prepared and installed on their employees devices...

Adul Al Salami Kebab, 15 Aug 2020Have you considered the legal issues here fully? One if cus... moreWe all know what side loading apps bring to phones. Just look at the fragmented mess that is Android.

There’s a reason why both Play and AppStore charge this percentage. It is the market size they offer and bring to developers. Smart and cautious customers do not dare to download apps from non reliable sources, these are known to be plagued with malwares.

Both Google and Apple spend billions on keeping their stores malware free and yes part of that 30% fee goes to that. There’s nothing wrong with charging this rate and clearly it’s been going well for Epic for years, why this sudden greed now? I tell you why, it’s to ride this antitrust noise surrounding Apple right now.

Do you honestly think alternative stores have the same or enough resources to do the same things both Apple and Google does to keep their massive libraries safe?

Again consumers have a choice, if gaming and x86 support is a necessity then don’t use Apple products. However knowing Apple I’m sure they will come up with even better alternative, they have a huge market willing to spend. Developers will come to support them, I guarantee you that.

This will harm Epic as a whole more than Google or Apple that’s for sure.

One if customers only have a Apple product and bought content in Fortnite they may try to sue one if not both companies! Worse yet here is no matter who you support the loser is the end customer... Another problem is "no one is forcing you to buy a Apple product?" Umm lets look at kids these days which refuse to give phone numbers to kids who does not own a iPhone? Or what if they are a govt employee then you are stuck with very few options and lets not forget that on iPhone & iPad THERE IS NO WAY TO SIDELOAD A APP!!! Lets look at next-gen MACs and iMACs? No x86 chips? Oh that means no Steam and no Fortnite especially now when you cannot even run the phone version... This will not cause Apple to go bankrupt but lets face it there is a whole generation of kids out there who might not want a iPhone anymore now that their most beloved game is gone? This may harm them in the future ya know.

EPIC wants to use the Appstore but don't want to pay the industry standard fee. They want Apple to give them exposure to their market but all of a sudden changed their mind to the agreement they agreed upon initially? The same agreement that made them millions.

They've made millions from the Appstore and I'm sure since iOS customers pay more on apps they would've made more from the Appstore than any other mobile stores.

This article is just filled with cheap android users who constantly expect free or pirated stuff anyway. So it's absolutely laughable how so many of you pretend to understand what's happening.

Epic will fail and I hope Apple ban them forever. They need Apple more than Apple needs them. They're just greedy.

In the Android world, it doesn't make sense to worry about being on Google unless it is tied to GMS. I am sure other stores would welcome their games.
