Microsoft BOB, 28 Oct 2020As much as I love and prefer LCD over OLED, mini-LED which ... moreYeah I totally agree, you make good points... The reason I thought Mini LED might happen is because I had read rumours about it being in the iPad Pro, but that didn't happen in the end, and even if it did, I suppose it wouldn't make as much sense in a smartphone as it would in a tablet.

Loosing the notification LED in a lot of phones has really frustrated me... Typically all we get nowadays from manufacturers is a single-colour white LED. I miss my OnePlus One and LG G4 with an RGB notification light where you could set the colours for each app, like having a green LED for WhatsApp and blue for Facebook. Now I have to manually check my phone to find out what a notification is.

I think we will see Mini LED in smartphones eventually, maybe not to the extent I was hoping (and I am sure OLED with still hold dominance) but it is already appearing in a couple of laptops which might be a positive sign of things to come. Right now I am trying to find a second-hand HTC U11 since it is one of the only flagship-level IPS handsets without any PWM flickering.

It it technically possible for mobile devices but has no advantages over OLED for manufacturers. Also all phones got rid of the notification LED and now rely on OLED's "Always on Display" feature to show notifications. That can't go away entirely and with LCD-based screens even if they are mini-LED, power-efficient AOD is not possible. Already people complain about OLED AOD still consuming more battery power than the humble and useful notification LED which is now sadly gone from almost all phones.

I have been stuck in the same cycle for years of seeing a new phone teased, getting excited about the possibility of owning it, then ultimately being let down and disappointed when it turns out to have OLED. At least when Mini LED comes along it should start the decline of OLED smartphones released in the flagship-level segment.

I remember Asus was able to put 5000mah battery in relatively smaller Zenfone 6, along with the jack. The way they did this was by using a sandwich motherboard design. The design had some issues though, it ended up being dead and you'll find many reports on that. Maybe they changed a design a bit this time to avoid those issues, we cannot know for sure until we get a teardown video. Let's see how they utilized that bottom part this time.

This somehow reminds me of the ZTE nubia Z20 but without the secondary screen at the rear. But that said, it's glad to see ASUS keep the flip motor mechanism for the Zenfone 7. It does look good.

I get that many here are disappointed by the removal of jack, and many who prefer the LCD over OLEDs (Me being one of them). But you'll be surprised to know that among the best selling flagships, none have a headphone jack. So if your claims were right, Samsung, OnePlus and Apple would have been losing money, and especially OnePlus who has gradually increased prices over years. The unique selling point of Zenfone 6 wasn't a headphone jack, Redmi K20 Pro had it and it was notchless too. People bought it for its unique camera setup. Same claims were made with Rog Phone 3 when it was launched, that what's the use of a gaming phone without a Jack, but it's doing well (atleast in India, where it starts at 568 Euro). I'm pretty sure wherever OnePlus 8 pro is sold, Zenfone 7 pro is going to be priced around it, and definitely below the 8T Pro. It has already been 4-5 years, and about time to move on from ancient tech called 3.5mm jack, the only reason it exists is because there are legacy device which still depend on it and aren't frequently refreshed as the case with smartphones.
