It is not choic... moreActually they take picture, but rather than color there is delay (distance) information, and it IS used for enhanced pictures, as smartphone tiny sensor doesn't have good enough RAW quality, multiple sensors are used to feed multiple data input into the software AI to improve drastically the picture quality, which is the point of methods like multiple bayer for exemple.
And it if was not something a phone maker would want, why are they still putting them ?
Like the new iPad and maybe the iPhone 12 with their LiDAR (that are ToF type sensor).
You just don't know what you talk about.
Well, considering their resolution is growing with time and that those sensor are EASIER to make than regular camera sensor anyway while being quite cheap, and that more and more new things like AR and AI improvement open door to the need for higher raw depth map resolution, they WILL come, the only thing slowing it is stupid peoples totally unaware of what is a depth sensor, how they work and what they are used for or what they could allow if they had higher resolution who complain about depth sensor mere existence and complain about the idea of a 12Mp depth sensor as if it would require to take a part of their soul to make those.

One sn845 costs 75eur...how da faq is price 800 eur?? And like sn865 is much more expensier...no company biy 1mio chipsets at full price. My rant was because of ppl like you. Demanding everything on phone, when it comes to price...omfg this Sony is so expensive..well suit yourself

Wow if this is true. Thank you sony for listening. Hope you can embed the fingerprint scanner on the power button. Since there were no compact phones from sony last year, I switched to the Note 10 as it looks like an xperia. So far i'm liking the note 10's Amoled screen and thinner bezels. I just wish it's a bit smaller without the punch hole camera and battery endurance could be better. So maybe the experia 5II is the phone I'm waiting for.

Most use for it because d... moreLaser autofocus actually is a ToF, it pulse a laser and measure the time the light need to bounce back, which is the description of Time of Flight sensors, now 3D ToF (depth camera) are different as they can either use LiDAR laser or IR flash LED type, to get a map of the scene.
Also 3D ToF is used for much more than just autofocus (and Brokeh), it deal with focus enhancement (I am talking about the software, post capture one, not autofocus) and can enable many possibilities, sadly they are still low resolution, 3D ToF were typically used in a more professional depth mapping situation that have little to do with photography, and for such use, a low resolution sensor is more than enough, but for photography, it doesn't work the same way, when 12Mp depth sensors (which would be cheap for the sensor itself, only their memory (array) would be kinda expensive), the possibilities we would have will blow everyone's mind.

Here, from many picture we get a depth map, but the opposite, with good AI scene completion (for hidden parts) would allow to do this from a single picture thanks to depth map.

But I do not know if its development was canceled or not.
Hard to say which rumors are true. They have very tough anti-leak policy there.
Specs of 1ii came out less than 1 day before its event. Just the design was out months before.

Lets get real ppl. There is a few things phones need and lots od them are just gimmicks. Whats needed on premium phone for 900 eur is 3,5mm jack, irda, good sound, great camera, great screen, great soc, great battery life, pure software,thats what ppl need for premium phone. 90hz screens? Omg we managed without them for years, yet now it is something which makes reason to make phone 50 eur expensier. Tof, depth, macro? Yea give versatility, yet if they are done badly...it is shite. Only macro which is good is on Poco, money well spent, otherwise another reason to make phone 50 eur more expensier. Big battery? Without optimisation..big battery makes chunky phone and you gain nothing. Another excuse for 30 eur more expensier phone. Face id, fingerprint? Oh c mon, yea i get it it is cool and fast, but how many ppl realistically use these two features? Maybe 30 percent, meanwhile it is great reason for another additional money. So here we go 200Eur from things we didnt use before and we managed it. Now they are onlu expenses. Glass all around? Are you kidding me? Im not clumsy person yet idk how S8 and Mi note 10 after one fall broke the glass. I liked plastic idea, but best idea had XZ with aluminum back and still waterproof. Less slippery than Glass as well.
Everything is a ripoff, all the manufacturers do is laugh . For us being such idiots.
