Having better specs, especially with better ram, processor and HDR10 screen, makes any phone miles better than a cheap piece of junk with "good" software support. Hardware can't be updated to fix those shortcomings, but software can always be changed or even fixed from the dev community. What good are consistent software updates if there isn't enough ram or the processor is too garbage to run them properly?

                $400? Seriously? For what? It's astonishing how some brands even today believe that their will sell at any price just because they had a value in the past.

                    I really like moto phones. But I will not buy another unless they update in a timely manner. I have motorola one zoom and still on android 9 and July 1st security update. I don't understand why it's so hard. Moto launcher is 90% the same as stock android

Phone wil... moreWell, Moto is giving at least one major update, security updates I think it will receive for a longer time, so I don't think it's a problem really. Even more, nowadays there is no really differences between updates, just some polishing overall. And in the end, as you said, you can install a custom Rom, there are plenty on XDA, not sure about newer ones..

                              Phone will definately worksl fine without updates but that doesn't mean it should not be updated?

                              If it doesn't need anything then I think one should also not update the security patches that it receives. Even without updates it will work. But question is how long can it be SECURE without updates? Is it worth paying that money for just a single update ?

                              Moto G3 is still works fine with custom ROM ( I am using Android 10 ROMs).

                                  Everything perfect, but I want a display without notch or punch hole. Either add a motor to use the back camera for selfies, or use bevels which allow for stereo front-facing speakers as well. Sony shows with the Xperia II line, that a bevel has its advantages.
