I think it clear that every vendor will attempt to do this in favour of push more new phone sales rather than provide update while 3rd party developer has always being pushing to release custom ROM's. Sure, features are cut, how about cut the bull crap and cut out the features that isn't possible to release/implement in the first place and release a stable official ROM?

I'm mean which 'carrier specific' feature that require to incorporate with the carrier that the phone can't do now? And if that the truth, OnePlus might just delay it indefinitely, as carrier's mostly ignore request from vendors unless you're at the scale such as Apple, Samsung, Huawei. Who want to dedicate resource when you don't even held 10% of the market? Never mind smaller carrier that probably don't even have the extra to deal with this in the first place. The sad reality of today's commercialized world. Capitalism at it finest.

Its a pathetic excuse coming from such a huge brand. They really shouldnt have to hold an update if its affecting only a small portion of users. Isnt it a risk to hold off security updates for more than 5 months? Many people cant use work related apps because of old security patches. Why should we be punished?

Similarly for 6 & 6T also the monthly updates are delayed. Due to which the phone started facing certain issues.

Hardware Hypervisor, 20 Sep 2020You were fooled. 1+5T launched with Android 7.1 when Androi... moreFair enuff. You make a good point. But Technically 3 updates. Morally 2 lols.

Hardware Hypervisor, 20 Sep 2020You were fooled. 1+5T launched with Android 7.1 when Androi... moreYeah they consider the regular and the t version as the same for updates. Even if 5t launched later it only gets stuff that 5 gets.

alchemist83, 20 Sep 2020? Fooled. Only fool around here apparently cannot count. 8,... moreYou were fooled. 1+5T launched with Android 7.1 when Android 8 already available. It should have launched with 8 out of the box. So effectively 2 OS updates to 9 and 10 with the last one being buggy. Don't be a fool

Hardware Hypervisor, 20 Sep 2020Don't be fooled. It launched with Android 7.1 when And... more? Fooled. Only fool around here apparently cannot count. 8, 9, 10. That'd be 3 THREE updates. Jesbus man. You yourself confirm. And for clarification Version 7.0 all the way till 7.1.2 are all Nougat Android Version 7.

Natural Selection, 19 Sep 2020impresive it begain with android 7 and got 3 major updates.... moreDon't be fooled. It launched with Android 7.1 when Android is already available. So effectively, 2 OS updates, with the last one being buggy

There is one simply and big reason :
Because Android is a hell of a fragmented OS.

While iOS depend on hardware and software made together, and Windows/Linux (that Android is based on) depend on drivers to be able to handle basically any hardware you throw at them.
Android have the worse of the two world where you literally need a different OS per phone model.

Had diversity been more important with more crazy designs and more feature diversity (the LG Wing and the LG Explorer project are a good example of those, phones with no camera or no front camera, with a special motorized part, with multiple additional ports, etc), we would have quickly seen because of this the need to counter this huge fragmentation, it would have lead to a more Windows/Linux like system with a base OS and drivers equivalent allowing to simply change near nothing between each devices except some "software blocks" being specially made per brands but still not hardware dependent.

It would have allowed to basically make any smartphone without any difficulty in term of OS as it would be as simple as base Android + hardware's drivers + brand specific softwares, making security updates easy and fast (and almost identical between each devices), same for new Android versions, custom brand ROM or Launcher, it would allow super old devices to still receive updates, and all software updates like camera improvements or other would be shared between all devices of the same brand with an easy time getting old devices having camera (and other hardware) updates.

And the way it would be made would also allow apps to either use brand specific software or, if not wished (like a Launcher app such as Nova Launcher that would need to bypass the brand launcher to work) or not available, fall back to the default Android, meaning all apps would get the full camera capabilities and being able to use all cameras, same for any specific hardwares.

That's one of the main reason I encourage diversity, it is a good thing for everybody.

1] The 5T was launched on November 16, 2017. Android 8 Oreo was launched in August 2017 itself. Despite having almost a three month window, the 5T was launched with Android 7 Nougat out of the box. Further, it received the Android 8 update in February 2018. OnePlus took 6 months to cook the Oxygen OS skin for the 5T.

2] Moving Ahead, Android 9 Pie was launched by Google on August 6, 2018, this version again got delayed for months by OnePlus, here's the official acknowledgement of the same:
https://www.gsmarena.com/pete_lau_o...t_a_bit_longer_for_android_pie-news-33770.php
It was finally rolled out in December 2018. Here, OnePlus took 5 months to cook the Oxygen OS skin for the 5T.

3] Now as per the official update cycle given by OnePlus themselves, it clearly states that post 2 years, the device will get bi-monthly security patches.
5T has received 2 security patches in total, post its life of 2 years.

4] Moving ahead, The update received in January, 2020 included the call end delay bug:
https://piunikaweb.com/2020/01/14/oneplus-5-5t-call-hang-up-bug/
Which literally felt like it was purposefully placed in there, such that the users would cave in and upgrade their devices.
No hotfix was given, the bug was patched in the next security update.

5] Now back at the keynote of the OnePlus 7, Carl Pie had accidently spilled out that the 5T will get android 10 in Q2 2020.
Now the Android 10 update came in on 26 May, 2020 as a 'phased rollout' and it broke the phone in endless ways and even took away existing features. OnePlus pulled the update.
Now this is another smart strategy by OnePlus.
What they do is they release an update (may it be bugged AF) for their devices such that it makes it to the news and then they pull the update. What happens by this is, firstly they make it to the news, this makes them deliver updates without actually delivering it. They did this with the OnePlus 7 pro as well in the bid to being the first OEM to release Android 10.
Secondly, potential buyers get attracted towards OnePlus, they think of it as a company giving timely and fast updates.

6] Amidst all this, OnePlus gave the cherry on top:

Hope you all can now understand how 'delayed' things have been for the OnePlus 5T.
