My Xiaomi Mi 6 has got plenty of software updates.
It was released with Android 7 and got Android 8 and 9, it was released with Miui 8 and got Miui 9. Miui 10 and Miui 11.

That's plenty of updates for a phone purchased for 330 euros.

Which makes any worry for software support irrelevant. I just don't worry about it on iPhone. Where with Android phone, I had several instances where phone was not even that old and I just stopped getting ANY updates just because new model has arrived and they basically dumped the old one almost immediately. And that wasn't just a one off occurrence, it was a regular thing.

AnonD-804996, 21 Sep 2020It's not. It's why no one offers any kind of half... moreI preffer the „market flood“ approach, like I have said. It allows me to pick a phone right down to the smallest detail. It’s like building your own PC, in a way. Firmware updates are nice and it’s true that it’s much easier to support a product when you only have 4 models, but I don’t really like keeping a phone for too long, so it a very long support cycle is not crucial. With technology moving so fast, it doesn’t make sense to use the same phone for half a decade, in my opinion. Not to mention it gets dropped, scratched and so on, then you have to live with it damaged for years. I preffer the mid-range solutions, but replaced more often.

You’re right in regards to the confusing naming schemes, but if the device is good, I don’t care what they name it. Besides, they do it all the time in other industries too. It’s not a good thing, but it’s not a deal breaker, either.

        Cheers!

As for this. I'm leaving this topic announcement afaik next week resolves. I only say that imo global Mi phone packs 64MP only. (and 108MP Chinese)

Also your comment. All brands in China have many models so you say they're all "in doubt" for years. Does it make sense? Unless doubt is other word for competition.

That said, I'm not defending having tooo many models however it's just their business literally.

Spanky, 20 Sep 2020It’s better like this, rather than having a measly 4 models... moreIt's not. It's why no one offers any kind of half decent software support. Apple does, because they only have 4 phones a year. There is no way Android makers can support all their 5000 models released every year. And that sucks. Also filling every single price bracket doens't make decisions easier for users, it just makes it confusing as hell. Just look at Realme and their product ranges with horrible model numbering and so many seemingly same models it's just awful.

Only interesting if it uses 9 pixel for binning not just 4 pixel.

This way Xiaomi can offer poor support and no real updates, forcing you to buy a new device with basically the same specs if you want software updates.

Just as importantly, churning out these "new" copies gets them monthly coverage on all the mobile-related sites, without having to come up with really new products.

I guess the strategy works on some, based on your comment.

To me 108MP is useless. I prefer having a good quality sensor with larger photosites. I'm sticking with pixel binning with my current 48mp sensor. Xiaomi, I wish I had the possibility to change the size of the picture with your 32mp selfie cam.
That said, may be there are people who actually need such sensors.

Dammit Xiaomi, just give your cheap Redmi phones NFC as well. You don't know how much of a dealbreaker the lack of that is for so many peopl.e

Even 12mp would be great with quality optics, processing and raw capabilities. A lot of phones lately got more artistic than real output. Also no exciting features like IR, AR, raw hdr make it through top brands...
