As soon as some app triggers the camera in the background the display portion will turn off obviously.

Because :
1) Privacy.
2) Bad picture quality.
3) Costly.
4) In the way of interesting and much better innovations.
Long answer.
Pop up camera are already "under the display" if you think about it, they are totally out of the way, but they also have none of the 3 (there are more, but I simplify things here) big downsides of underdisplay camera.
Here is one of the reason why dedicated front camera need to disappear in order to get way better things and that underdisplay camera get in the way of achieving :
Not only the main camera have way superior quality over the front camera, but also, I strongly believe that the ultimate evolution of the pop up camera is a mix between the Asus Zenfone 6/7/7 Pro, Galaxy A80 concept and Oppo Find X implementation.
Basically you only have main camera on the back, and the pop up serving as a physical shutter to them when not in use (like the Find X, great for privacy) and have 3 positions :
*Masked, where the camera are simply hidden and protected.
*Back/Half lifted, making the main/back camera unmasked and therefor able to see normally.
*Main/Fully lifted, where internal periscope like structure would make them see frontward, allowing to use the superior main camera sensor for taking pictures and the additional periscope that allow to see in front would have lenses optimizing them for closer distances that are typical of selfies.
Not only it would allow for much better pictures, allowing privacy and since there aren't any physical camera sensor inside the pop up, making it simple and fast, but also saving number of sensors and not just by not having front one(s) :
It can also be combined with a clever periscope-like system where the same sensor using the 90° reflectors as physical shutters, can be feed from multiple lenses configurations.
Meaning with a single big and high quality sensor (think IMX689), you can have all regular/wide, ultra-wide, telephoto, macro and portrait mode from this amazing sensor without the extra cost of having multiple sensors, saving a lot of money and greatly improving the quality in all of those which can all have OIS thanks to that if it is in/pre-sensor.
Now THAT would be way more interesting than underdisplay camera, and thanks to the saved cost, a double depth sensor camera using a mix of ToF and structured light together (in technical details, the more precise structured light pattern would get help from the ToF for extra precision, dots miss-identification fix and simpler algorithm by knowing which one is probably the most likely to be which on the two camera by also using stereo 3D) which would create an incredibly precise depth map which will serve for computational photography enhancement, augmented/mixed reality and 3D facial recognition, all that while still costing less that just having a single underdisplay camera + multi camera setup.

Sound dont need to be pointing at your face as they can come out of the edge of the phone on top and bottom. Like there is the speakers already. It just needs holes trough where it is coming out. Dont need to have bezel on the screen for it that makes no sense. Like the bezel is a speaker membrane

Anonymous, 23 Sep 2020Saw the Youtube review on that ZTE Axon and the under displ... moreThis is because the ZTE Axon 20 5G is more a beta test (that will never get a "final release") than a regular finalized phone, the price is super low, even without the underdisplay tech it have a too low price to be legit, it is obvious they sell it at loss, there are few reasons for that :
*The tech isn't mature and actually isn't ready for mass production or public release but they still released it anyway.
*The tech isn't even having a properly implemented algorithm yet and peoples will be used as a test bench, you can be sure to see a lot of updates in short succession, some may even bring worse image quality or huge bugs as a result.
*It serve to help mature the production process, I wouldn't even be surprised if there are multiple display variants so they can test which one are the best.
*It is a huge social exposition move, and as expected, it many news articles did talk about it.
That being said, this tech have inherently negative picture quality whatever you do, you can compensate it by a lot using many AI, pixel arrangements and other tweaks, but there will never be a picture as good as one taken by a regular camera.

Can not see it at all on darker colors and in lighter color looks like very faint image retention.
