Google says Pixel 5’s screen gap has no impact on water resistance

04 November 2020
It also said it would evaluate issues on a case-by-case basis.

AnonD-804996, 04 Nov 2020Not actually. IPx5 is already resistant against flow of 100... moreThat's a common mistake to make, but IP rating isn't cumulative, because IPx8 is better than IPx7 often make you think that IPx8 is better and have all features of IPx7 which do the same with IPx6 which do the same with IPx5, but in fact it isn't the same.
In fact, while IP1x to 6x is incremental and cumulative, for the liquid part it only go from IPx1 to IPx6 (and IPx6k) for water pressure and IPx7 to IPx8 for immersion, IPx9k is like a higher IPx6k.

So a smartphone protected for IP67/68 is NOT protected for IP65/66, those are two completely different kind of stress.
This is why, sometimes, there are phones who have both, this is the case for many Sony Smartphones :
https://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_5_ii-10396.php
If you read the description, it say :
"IP65/IP68 dust/water resistant (up to 1.5m for 30 mins)" because it have been tested for both.

Keep in mind that IP isn't ment for waterproofs nor for smartphones, it is made for, mostly, static objects, like a shower speaker, a outdoor outlet, outdoor light or security camera and such kind of stuff that would need to survive specific scenarios.

So, don't use an IP67 or IP68 rated phone in the shower, even IPx5/IPx6/IPx6k as those tests aren't repeatable, they are done with clean water and doesn't take into consideration temperature (except for IP69k) and repeated degradation from any substance such as chlorine, salt or any acidity in your tap water, nor the wear the joints have from natural use of the phone or after long term exposure to liquids, and it doesn't immune you from having a defective joint, and regardless what is the problem, if they had replaced your phone for water damage in the past, nothing force them to do it again, in fact there are many reports and post online about IP rated phones damaged/killed by water and the company refusing to fix or replace the phone.

Simply Google is covering up the flaw on the phone. I was really excited to to PIXEL 5, and was just one click away in buying it. I don't really appreciate the way google tend to work on new phones. Just a marketing thingy for it's OS platform.
The front cam of still quite similar to the one I have now on pixel 2 xl 🙄

Reminds me of the Xperia Z1 that had a similar issue, and sony also claimed like google that it was part of the design.. it went right back to the store.

It's too bad though because if the pixels were manufactured by a reliable third party they'd be really amazing phones.

I don't think any shower can achieve that. IP68 must always exceed that. There is IPx9K rating which is essentially for power washers resistance as no shower or submersion will ever achieve such pressures of up to 10 MPa (that's up to 100 bar which is stupid powerful).

And for the rest, I didn't talked about a phone that get killed with any single drop of water, a well enough build phone to withstand accidental drop in water and rain is more than enough, I am not against water resistant phones, I just said it is over rated, awesome features like pop up that still allow the phone to survive drop in water are killed because peoples are obsessed with water resistance.
And IP rating by itself is totally useless, we can make water resistant phones and even waterproof phones without this certification.

And well, considering they have so little faith in IP certification they not only they don't cover any water damage, but they go as far as putting water stickers in the phone because it would cost more to change all water damaged/killed phones over having the good reputation (which is still important often to the point of costing a lot), and that there are tons of reports of IP rated phones damaged or killed by water, it is almost like a scam...

Not only it doesn't guarantee that the phone will actually survive immersion or even regular water encounter (there are many IP rated phones dying because of water), but no brands cover water damages.
And on top of that, people think it is "waterproof" and use their phone dangerously, like going diving or in the pool because they initially advertised IP rated phones that way...

I'd take a phone with an ATM rating or from a brand that cover water damage anyday over an IP rated phone.
