Kangal, 07 Nov 2020Thanks for the question. They released the Nintendo Switch ... moreYou care so much about specs, yet you quote FP16 numbers for GPU FLOPS and then compare them across architectures. You want 3.8x higher performance ( Handheld mode 157 FP32 GFLOPS vs. proposed 600 FP32 GFLOPS) and significantly higher battery life at same time, because 14 nm is apparently a magic bullet.
By the way, Switch supports micro SDXC upto 2TB and Nintendo online is 20 USD/year.

Mediatek sux, 08 Nov 2020>So instead of less sales with larger profit-margins, th... moreThey have.
It's just the decision makers there (ie Top Managers) have a different perspective on business. Both Sony and MS agree to slim profits on hardware, they make their money back on games and accessories. Nintendos management agrees for good profits on all hardware, this limits developer interest, which reduces consumer demand, results in less games sales, so overall their profits aren't as big as the other two. That's why Nintendo is so aggressive against piracy, emulation, and indie developers.
Last time they were a "flagship" console seller was with the N64. They compromised that system slightly when they removed the CD Tray, which lead to the birth of the Sony PlayStation. The GameCube launched too late, and had miniDVDs that were a nightmare for developers. The Nintendo DS had a gimmick (two screens) but wasn't powerful enough for 3D Gaming unlike the PSP. It was saved by gimmicks and first-party titles. The Wii used the same processor as GameCube and lacked proper HDMI for the new FHD/HD TVs, so was ill-matched against the X360 and PS3. It was successful with clever marketing and gimmicks. The 3DS wasn't successful. The WiiU wasn't successful. Why? Consumers were fed up with the weak systems, and the gimmicks/casual gaming itch was better on smartphones. Hence, Xbox One was mildly successful, and PS4 a landslide.
If Nintendo doesn't come up with something good, and soon. Well the Switch is going to become obscured into handheld category like the DS. And their next console is going to flop like the WiiU. My suggestion is they come up with a new Switch, one that fixes ergonomics, more portable, much larger battery, uses new tech, heaps of RAM, stupid-fast CPU, and a tiny GPU. So when it's in handheld mode it's just a more comfy Switch. But when you dock it, the dock has a second GPU inside, and this one is just fast enough to pay next-gen games.

Kangal, 07 Nov 2020Thanks for the question. They released the Nintendo Switch ... more>So instead of less sales with larger profit-margins, they would've settled on more sales with smaller profit-margins, which would even out the financial deficit quickly (and in the long-term outpace it).
But why would a large and succesful company like nintendo not think of this?

Mediatek sux, 06 Nov 2020And which soc were they supposed to use in the switch accor... moreThanks for the question. They released the Nintendo Switch in mid-2017, based on 2014 technology. Simply put, they could have used 2016 technology instead. They are a big company, they needed to have the SoC custom made for it, instead of repurposing old chipset. They repurposed an old chipset to save costs so that they could have a big profit margin. This is short-term business thinking. Whereas long-term business planning would be to sacrifice some of those profit margins to release a better device, increase the brand, and extend the product's lifetime. So instead of less sales with larger profit-margins, they would've settled on more sales with smaller profit-margins, which would even out the financial deficit quickly (and in the long-term outpace it). Here's my hypothetical comparison.
What Nintendo delivered:
- March 2017, supply limited release
- Launch: Zelda, Skylanders, Apps
- 32GB eMMC 5.1 internal storage (upto 128GB microSD expand)
- 4GB LPDDR4 RAM
- Underclocked 22nm planar-wafer
- 1.3GHz Quadcore Small Cortex A53
- 1.1GHz Quadcore ARM Cortex A57
- 700MHz "Maxwell Core" GPU docked
- 300MHz "Maxwell Core" GPU handheld
- Docked Performance (~0.7 TFlops) 900p, 35fps, Low-setting, slightly faster than WiiU
- Handheld Performance (~0.4 TFlops) 720p, 25fps, Low-Setting, slightly slower than WiiU
- Sealed 4300mAh battery
- 3h (intense) / 6h (casual) gaming battery life
- 50'C warm temperatures handheld, Dock with Poor Passive Cooling
- Limited 3rd party involvement (like the struggling GameCube)
- gimmicks galore, weird ergonomics, subpar hardware and a confusing/misleading product
- Paid online subscription, US$60 yearly
(this steep paywall ensures their online services will be lacking and unprofitable for years)
- US$60 games (console prices)
- US$300 launch price = Targets only kids with rich parents
- USD$200 discounted price years later = Targets kids, already moved to iOS/Android by now
What I hoped Nintendo would give us:
- November 2016, well stocked release
- Launch: Zelda, Mario Kart 8, Fifa 17, Splatoon 2
- 64GB USF 2.0 internal storage (upto 512GB microSD expand)
- 8GB LPDDR4 RAM
- Balanced 14nm FinFet lithography
- No HyperThreading or Small Cores
- 2.1GHz Octacore ARM Cortex A73
- 1100MHz "Pascal Core" docked
- 400MHz "Pascal Core" handheld
- Docked Performance (~1.4 TFlops) 1080p, 30fps, Medium-setting, slightly faster than XB1
- Handheld Performance (~0.6 TFlops) 720p, 30fps, Medium-Setting, slightly faster than WiiU
- User Removable 5000mAh battery
- 4h (intense) / 10h (casual) gaming battery life
- 45'C warm temperatures handheld, Dock with good Active Cooling
- Lots of 3rd party game ports (like the excelling Xbox)
- No gimmicks, just great hardware and a clear product
- Free online for 12 months, US$40 yearly thereafter
(online subscription has No Value unless you have games, features, and hooked users)
- US$40 games (halfway between mobile and console prices)
- US$400 launch price = Target adults that have money
- US$230 discounted price years later = Targets kids, appealing as 3DS is phased out
....these are all plausible changes they refused. Any questions?

Snapdragon 875 is 5nm, same size as Apple's A14 chip. Expect a large increase in battery life, unless you drain your battery with features such as 120Hz display, playing games at max settings etc.
