They custom tailored the chipset and the OS to tightly operate together. Anyone who uses iPhone knows how important that is and how powerful it is. No one else has that luxury. Not Android phone makers, not Microsoft with Windows. So I kinda understand why Apple decided to go this path. They can really push the optimizations hard on both software and hardware, creating products that can't be matched by any "generic" integrations others use. And because their entire ecosystem is under their control, they can do such shifts relatively easily. There is no way Microsoft can sugets, let alone force Qualcomm or Mediatek to start designing chips the way Microsoft wants unless they make a custom order for them. And that again creates problems for both sides. Apple doesn't have these issues and I think they'll play hard. Only spot where I'm not sure they could do it is replacement for desktop Macs with Xeon CPU's with 28 cores and 56 threads. But they seem confident for now...

I couldn't watch it from the beginning, so I don't know their claims. I would wait for quite a few months before reacting to this new world. I don't want to spend fortunenes on laptops. But Mac Mini is interesting.

If you compare a bench run test ARM versus Intel it looks that ARM performs better, true, because it is simpler and you compare the same common operations, you do not compare what x86 has with what ARM does not have and it has to emulate through embedded microcode or even slower it has to simulate using OS software but Windows OS and Linux OS are based on such complex operations. Android and iOS do not run many services in background and use simple user apps.

AnonD-804996, 10 Nov 2020While I'm not using desktop or laptop Macs, I'm w... moreMicrosoft tried ARM and it did not work for heavy processing needed by a desktop or laptop computer, the single thread execution is slower on ARM, RISC than CISC because you have in hardware complex operations in x86, and the parallel execution with multiple cores is not exploited too much by current OS kernels on a single user access, for mainframe, servers yes, having multiple concurrent users but not on personal notebook, laptop used as a workstation. This is for Apple a financial trick to sell more iPads in the shape of light notebooks.

While I'm not using desktop or laptop Macs, I'm wondering how ARM based solutions will be able to fare against x86 that they had till now. So, it'll be an interesting event to observe even if you're not even an Apple user, because if they do well, it might just totally redefine desktop computing as we know it. And incentive for Microsoft to invest more into ARM.
