Anonymous, 19 Nov 2020Cinebench is a more relevant benchmark and M1 does not comp... moreYour analogy is innacurate.
First of all, the macbook air consumes like 2/7 of the power of an AMD ryzen 7 4800HS and 2/9 of the power of a AMD ryzen 7 4800H(10W TDP vs. 35W and 45W TDP).
Second of all, the architecture is different. The 8 cores of the M1 are actually 4 high power cores and 4 high efficiency cores(for better battery life). The 8 cores on the AMD Ryzen 7 4800 series are all high performance cores, which sacrifice on battery life in exchange of performance.
Plus, are you EVER going to run an application that needs the power of all 8 cores? Probably not. That's the job of the 16 inch devices.
Besides pushing all 8 cores to the max(which is unrealistic), apple M1 ties or even performs better than AMD ryzen 7 counterparts in all other scenarios.

Nick Tagataka, 14 Nov 2020"Nobody cares about your per Watt performance"
W... moreWhat he probably means to say is that Apple can have their victory with per Watt performance but most people aren't going to switch from good ol windows for that.
It's like Windows Phone OS running smoothly without lags on 512mb RAM.
Same wasn't the case for Android phone running on 512mb RAM. But people wouldn't pick Windows phone as barring a few basic apps, the ecosystem was non existent.
They went with Android despite being less smooth for that hardware.
Windows gas that sought after ecosystem of apps and services which cannot be found on MacOS. So most people don't care about per Watt performance of cpu inside Mac since they aren't going to switch to MacOS for that.

What the hell? That's easily one of the most important metric when it comes to quantifying how good the processors are especially if they are low power processors. Anyone who call themselves a tech enthusiast SHOULD be at least concerned about this topic even if they don't have a strong interest in mobile CPUs.

When apple's chips destroy the competition, you downplay it by saying that "nobody cares" about MacOS.
The M1 chip has nothing to do with the OS, it's just powering it.
If AMD or Intel released this chip you would be all over it.

Literally no one gives a damn about your MacBook.
Atleast in smartphones, people know about Apple through iPhone.
The casual user in the PC market is clueless about MacOS.
The OS marketshare for Mac is just too low for people to care.
Nobody wants to use that handicapped mess.
People want to use smooth functioning Windows that they are familiar with for 20 plus years now.
