Anonymous, 11 Nov 2020Seems a good device, but everything looks more integrated a... more.. ever since ram and storage soldered on. its has being the same.
pc people buy then stop upgrading for years..
by the time you need upgrading, the parts is old.
if it break before that, apple care takes care of it.

Seems a good device, but everything looks more integrated and thus less repair friendly. You may need to replace the whole motherboard for a tiny issue knowing apple's history

If the battery, cooling system, and amount of RAM are equal, which one is giving more maximum performance, and how long that maximum performance sustains. This will help justify their switch unless something goes awry.

I did ask if there wasn't 20 hour PC laptops out there, and that there used to be around 100 hour laptop in my day (Psion x86 laptop) but not the only one in more than 20 hour category. Is it our fault if the moderator doesn't know the hardware history?

DroidBoye, 11 Nov 2020Are you sure if it's new architecture though? There we... moreIt just mean the ram is IN the chip. Same as what you see in normal phone's SoC. CPU / GPU / RAM all share the same die.
Typical intel / pc / or apu amd, the ram is external to the cpu / gpu. And only a small cache is found in the die.

Since it's 8 gb unified memory, they could be have had 16 gb easily.

I really like to know the mah of the battery they use for the M1 powered Macs.
For instance, Apple may give it a smaller battery considering the efficiency of the SoC. That means if they gave same sized battery they've had for the x86 13" Mac Pros before, then it's pretty good. But if they added a smaller battery after considering the efficiency of the SoC then that's another hardware crippling for less production costs which in turn more ka-Ching!
With the M1 they've:
1. Cut-off a costly middleman (Intel and AMD).
2. Lessen manufacturing expense for thermal dissipation.
3. Lessen the actual capacity (mah) of the battery.
4. Choose the cheapest fab processing plant for their SoC's mass production.
All the while retaining or even making higher pricing (relative to competition spec by spec).
This is a "Big brain time" time move from Apple but a pretty good one to make investors happy.

nik, 11 Nov 2020Apple's statement regarding cooling fan contradicts fo... moreAll just to save costs IMO. In their recent X86 Macbook Air 2019, they have fans ang heatsink but never actually add a heatpipe for wicking the heat towards the fan. All depends on the airflow. Building my Android app in an air-conditioned room still made the laptop really hot up to its palm rest.

Annas, 10 Nov 20208gb ram UNIFIED MEMORY is default You can go BTO for 16gb ... moreAre you sure if it's new architecture though? There weren't that much info about specifics but talking about unified RAM, AMD APUs does that and they're not limited to 16GB of RAM config. Unified RAM is not an actual innovation unless they implement it via fancy HBM tech and I'll be amazed.

I see that Apple still retains the Thunderbolt support for the new ARM-powered MacBooks. Would be nice to find out how the M1 ARM chipset fairs against an eGPU.

Just exactly what I need...if I didn't just bought macbook pro 2020 just 2 months ago. All the reports & leaks said Apple will release the new chipset next year at the earliest.

Apple's statement regarding cooling fan contradicts for air and pro. At the Air, they said some vugi-jugi and reasoned that, Air do no need fan and then when the advertised Pro..they said..we've a cooling system that blah blah blah.... hahahaha

Others look impressive for me, so I just point out one thing that's disappointed me: why not 4 USB-C ports instead of 2...
