Oculus Quest 2 review

15 November 2020
We dive right into the VR realm with the Olucus Quest 2 - the hot new headset with great features and amazing value, wrapped-up in unfortunate Facebook controversy.

NotAnOpinion, 15 Nov 2020After so many years, this thing still look massively awkwar... moreIt is obvious that this device is going for the masses that can't afford super expensive devices. While apple usually is doing the contrary.
It is not fair comparing this with any other that cost more than double. In that regard, no one can compare to. Also, you can plug it to a PC and play great VG, and you can do more than that.
Your review sound super snob.

I just got the oculus quest 2 and i love it, but it has some problems first its a bit to heavy second you need a really good computer to stream games from steam and good wifi so get it if you want but look at it all online first or if your friend has one try that first.

can't wait to get it! really excited and can't wait to try battlefield 3 gameplay with it. #virtualvisualfield

VR headset seems like a cool gadget but I can't seem to find people demonstrating fantastic games I would love to play in VR. Maybe half-life Alyx, but that is about it.
Talking at length about a headset... well, not my kind of thing.

Hardware was not and is not the major issue, it's the lack of killer apps to make this stuff shine.

it's never about the technology which will make video game product sucessful or not, it's about the number of games, exclusivity of the games and the quality of the games, if this is lacking, then it's doomed to fail, is there many killer apps games for oculus quest 2? games which are quality and showcase the system above the competition, i can't see many apart from Half Life VR game, but time will tell if this ends up like apple pippin, 3do, wii u or dreamcast

Anonymous, 16 Nov 2020You must live in China...Why ? Because I don't want to have an account on this totally useless websites that have the worse track record of privacy and other personal data respect and even did experiments on users ?

Well, no, I live in Europe, I just don't need this thing and the Quest 2 won't be a justification to get it anytime soon.

This is not a hypothetical comment, like most in this comment section will be, but instead coming from someone who owns both the Lenovo Explorer and the Quest 2.

I've used my Lenovo for a few years and was always wanting more, but the WMR technology seems to have almost completely stopped. The really thick and quite short cable took away a lot from the experience. The controllers seem have a battery life of about 2h, I always have charged batteries ready to plug in. There are a lot of interferences that make the Bluetooth controllers lose tracking from time to time. Not fun in a fast-paced game. After about 2 weeks with the Quest 2, it's fair to say the Lenovo will go back in the box.

The elephant in the room is facebook. You need a facebook account to start using the app, you need a credit card to unlock the developer options. They did not start pushing ads yet nor selling your experiences and real (not virtual) room, but it's probably planned.

The Lenovo seems to have a higher horizontal FOV, as noted, but I think that also applies to the vertical FOV.

Setting up the playfield on the the Quest 2 is a joy, compared to the cumbersome WMR setup. It's also able to recall it better. Can track quite well in less light while WMR needs a ton of [non-flickering] light.

Controller tracking might be in the visual field only, but in my experience it's much better on the Quest2 vs the WMR. I would frequently lose the controllers in games where you had to reach for your backpack, this almost never happened with the quest.

The speakers might look silly and small, but, at least for me, they sound outstanding.

Everyone seems to mention Virtual Desktop but no one is mentioning the free open-source solution ALVR. It works very well, wirelessly, has a ton of configuration options to tune it. Since the PC doesn't have to decode the WMR playfield (which takes a TON of processing), you might now get more FPS out of a game.

Being an all-in-one solution means you can take it with you everywhere you go and show it off. You can even use it outside. It does replace the need for a big 3D TV since you can now watch 2D or 3D movies on a large virtual screen with good sound. Works MUCH better than shutter glasses.

To all people complaining about the 2-3h battery life: have you used one? How many hours will you stay in VR in one session? A secondary battery is a must, attached to the back strap, but mostly because of balance, not battery life.
To people complaining about the SoC - have you used one?
To people complaining about the price - have you used one? Comparing it to what?

As good as it can be, I won't poke that with a 3m stick.
I don't have any personal Facebook account and I clearly don't plan on having one, mainly considering that peoples that have had legit Facebook account got banned for no reasons and totally lost the capability to use their headset...

Also, there is a way better alternative for PC headset, the DecaGear 1, look it up !

It can't be helped, but playing VR games still makes one look dorky.

NotAnOpinion, 15 Nov 2020After so many years, this thing still look massively awkwar... moreWhat apple will do is create an average product and then overhype it . Wait until the day they enter the foldable phone markets. Will have the latest A bionic chips etc but will be bang average

facebook : all your bases belong to us!
                                  resistance is futile.

just say no people, there are better headsets with the fb spying.

After so many years, this thing still look massively awkward / UGLY, 2 hours on a single charge is pathetic for today's sections, using a custom 865 SoC seems very underpowered (the cartoonish graphics).

Don't worry, though. When Apple's VR / AR / MR / SR headset finally hit the market, Apple's offering will show the world how VR, etc. is done right.
