And here I thought I was going to miss the anti-iPhone clown parade.
Nope, they’re right on time as predicted.

I have seen that behaviour on almost every smartphone, this common and nothing special from Apple. Could see that wit the Huawei P30 Pro, Oneplus 7, 7t pro, 8 pro, Samsung S20 Plus and a few others I have tested. The algorithm decides on the light situation that a digital crop might give a better picture than them telecam in the same situation. Usually the algorithms do a good job.

Umm... isn't this how it's supposed to be? Telephoto lenses are not meant to be used at night.

The rest of the world has moved on to 10x optical zoom on smartphones with great photo and video quality from telephoto lens.
Apple is stuck at 2-2.5x.
They continue to give users ancient cheap hardware and software.
Completely dead in the innovation department.

I don't think this is a problem. You'd want highest possible light captured by the sensor in low light condition and there's no way a zoom lense can perform better than the main camera.
