Anonymous, 13 Nov 2020Everything you said may be true. But for normal users like ... moreI agree with that. I've used mac for two years now and still feel that this was very wrong choice. In shop everything felt wow and I can get over these minor nuances but in reality I wasn't able to come over of mac peculiarities. So, for me 2.5 k EUR macbook is expensive browser frame and lesson not to be lured with the claims that this is UNIX and works fine. Under the shiny UI macOS has a lot of problems and incompatibilities (e.g. their own vision of UNICODE), no package management, broken shell by default (although they kinda fixed it with zsh), default ssh is compiled without libreadline support, virtually no reasonable NTFS write support etc, etc :D
Besides rather toy OS macs have excellent hardware and battery life. So, as a travel laptop its still OK, but for working this is torment.

You can't make a cake without breaking some eggs right? Well, it seems like Rosetta is not solving ALL the problems... https://support.native-instruments.com/hc/en-us/articles/360013515618-macOS-11-Big-Sur-Compatibility-News

Anyone with an OS X mini, laptop, or desktop.... DO NOT UPGRADE.
There's always some things that are downgraded, and certain annoying bugs abound. Let the first and second versions be pushed, before attempting. That way you get a much more polished software.

Personally, I think the "Best Macs" are all from the same year 2015.
That includes the Early-2015 MacBook Pro 13in Retina (14nm dual core).
There's also the Mid-2015 MacBook Pro 15in Retina (14nm quad core, with dGPU).
And lastly the Late-2015 iMac 5K model (upgrade the internals yourself).
....all of these are built to last, and are going for a steal on eBay/craigslist/gumtree/facebook.

So maybe for the "smart buyers" who own these machines, perhaps they can finally upgrade to either the 2020 Macs (Apple M1) or to 2021 Macs (Apple M2) when they fix a lot of the issues with the first-gen rollout.

Anonymous, 13 Nov 2020i think he meant video playback. the browser itself support... moreI know what you meant, but I thought that was just an issue on my iPad Pro and other iOS devices.
I had no idea MacOS was not able to even watch 4K content on Youtube ... I mean wow, I use 4K for like 5 years on PC and never had an issue with compatibility.

Anonymous, 13 Nov 2020Mac OS has smooth animations it is well optimized but it lo... moreWindows cannot run xCode. MacOS can run all ide. Means you can code for virtually everything in the known world.
MacOS can run Windows (VM or bootcamp). Windows cannot run MacOS. That automatically means MacOS > Windows(Sure you can hackintosh, but that's RUNNING MacOS as the host! lol)
Windows does not have SSH natively, MacOS have terminal out of the box. So you can create sock5 connection without need of any programs.
Windows 10 have issue with cisco VPN, MacOS just run any VPN.
MacOS is free, Windows 10 buy.. again and again.
MacOS Pages / Keynote / Numbers free, Windows Buy office 365.. pay monthly or yearly.
MacOS handles multi display the best, run clamshell mode, mission control.

Since you use MacOS for a month only, i forgive what you say since you may lack the apps and knowledge about it, and see only eye candy. Once you can wield both OS effectively, productivity on a Mac is unparalleled, and Windows.. heh it will live in macOS as a Virtual machine.

And plus get over it, laptop of this size, form factor and build materials in windows world are comparable in terms of price. And on top of that, you can configure beast like this to 2TB storage / 16GB.. not much laptop on the market allows you to build to such specs and deliver to your doorstep.

Anddddd, its running MacOS.. the OS build solely for this M1.

Mac OS has smooth animations it is well optimized but it looks really basic and childish colorful. And I don't speak about features and customization where it lacks many things. You can do more things on Windows 10. And if you want to play games stay away from anything else and go for Windows. Long time Windows user. Used Mac OS for a month.

"With Rosetta 2, Big Sur enables existing Intel apps to run seamlessly on M1 Macs. This apparently means that developers may see some of their most graphically demanding apps perform even better on an M1 Mac with Rosetta 2 than they did running natively on Intel Macs with integrated graphics."

The overhead caused by the translation/emulation layer won't help, tho.

Such a leap forward, you go from ultra-crappy integrated graphics to somewhat less crappy integrated graphics on your $1300+ notebook. I'm not sure that's a great way to showcase these new Macs.

You wont see a proper Apple Silicon MacOS until 2030

Since,MacOS has to support both Intel Code and it's own M1 Silicon ARM Code.

Even though the transition will end in 2 years, the MacOS will keep supporting the X86-64 code for at least 8 years just like they supported PowerPC code for 6 years post switch to Intel.

So Apple will launch Intel based laptops till 2022 plus 8 years of Intel support.

Thus in 2030, Apple will Roll out a completely Out and outa Silicon based Laptop with Zero Intel compatibility code.

Only then you will see the Advantage of Apple Silicon
