Whackcar, 22 Nov 2020Multimedia consumption on smartphones has skyrocketed in th... moreSince about 2005,I have been explaining that one of the main reasons driving screen size up has been that makers "start of art" devices have had bigger, "better" display tech, but at higher device price, in general, its older folk who have the income etc to afford such devices, AND being older, their eyesight not as good, or as used to looking at tiny screens, so bigger/better screens easier for older folk to read/use.
Tech/price changes have made bigger screens cheaper, more and more big screen devices at lower price has driven the mobile media market, many services, always good ideas, very successful now, were a flop a few years back cos you just cannot comfortably watch media on a 4.7-5 Ince device, especially if you have ever had access to say,a 7 inch tablet, which is why I kept saying we would end up with PHABLETS,top spec phones, just with tablet sized screens, and oh look,we are now, all buying PHABLETS,and high spec 4.7-5 inch market is a tiny niche corner, and even if flopple released a small idiot phone for the dullard hipsters,or Sammy released one, they won't sell very many..

Companies just cater to people looking just at the screen diagonal number. A stretched aspect ratio provides a higher number while also providing less screen area.

But still there's a huge difference on the good old 16:9 ratio from the past vs the 19:9 + we have nowadays 🙄
I'm happy for my Mate 20X, but still miss the 16:9 format.

Each person uses a phone in their own way. For media consumption and gaming large screens are amazing, and that's what most people do these days, but for everything else the size becomes a massive hindrance. With Kindle Paperwhite being my main entertainment device I would prefer having a small phone that I can actually use with one hand without having to shift it about awkwardly to press something in the top left corner of the screen, and at this point Apple, as much as I disrespect the company for some of its practices, has the only realistic option for a pocketable pure productivity device. For someone who was once (and would still be) happy with a 2.8" HTC Touch, a 5.4" phone is more than enough, if not slightly excessive.

Multimedia consumption on smartphones has skyrocketed in the past 5 years. Everyone is glued to their phones watching some form of media. That is why demand for larger screens keep increasing.
As soon as foldables become cheaper, everyone would jump to them, and the ideal screen size would be 8"+.

I use 7.2 inch ( Huawei mate 20 x )
Its a joy to use....but the weight (232gm ) is the concern.
I feel pain in prolong use..
Large screen but not exceeding 200gm would be more welcome
