It seems like Apple has dialed down the image processing algorithm for ProRaw. Yes, there is still some obvious sharpening going on but it's not as severe as JPG oversharpening. One thing I do would really want to know though: Do ProRAW quality will be any different than Lightroom or Halide's RAW quality?

I think saying your phone currently happens to be a iPhone 12 Pro Max is pushing it a little... you mean the current tablet you also use as a phone is the 12 Pro Max!

Unnecessary feature.
So many ordinary people out there even not understand about RAW and not use it.
If you ask some girls in the public with their iphone, they even not understand RAW, ISO, tilt shift, time lapse, etc etc.
They just shot and then instastory, shot and then instastory again

Raw: Uncompressed and unprocessed image (looks decent taken by DSLR but crap when taken by cellphone).
Pro-Raw: Uncompressed image with noise reduction and multiframe exposure adjustments.
HEIC/jpeg: Compressed image with noise reduction, multiframe exposure adjustments, sharpening and colour adjustments.
Raw+jpeg: ???

What a terrible showing by Apple in 2020, tons of over sharpening and overprocessing, like Samsung in 2017, good bye great Apple cameras, left in the dust.

Ok, so with regular filming. The extra quality and bits are to rescue your footage, or give it a certain style. The same applies to stills. It's an excellent call for jpeg+proraw, or just proraw+metadata that can be used to instantly turn it into the jpeg equivalent, or what ever look selection/lut you have dailed into your camera.
Say, you want your wedding picks to be slightly moody, toned down. You can arrange a look, or select one from elsewhere, and use it in post, but also with metadata, virtually as you take pictures. But say, if you just want to take standard photos instead, but the bride and groom are some place in the murky shadows, or half shadows, or the opposite, in the bright light or half in the bright light, and the shot just isn't doing it justice. That's where a superior format can help you save the shot. In the immediatory walk through the dimly yellowy light of the hallway and past the baptismal with stain glass windows, are three shots which might not work out (which you should also let any official photographer or camera man get first). With sufficient performance, they can be adjusted for a desirable look.
So, while one can use raw all day to adjust everything, you can just do the most minor adjustments, as the author does here, and use it where really needed. But, it's those things you absolutely need to rescue which are important.

What we really want is ProRes Raw, but Red camera, apparently,hold patents. Apple was going to crush, had a meeting and caved in. I suspect there were other patents involved.
However there were laws on Patents to ensure they were available from multiple choices. But they have done changes to the patent system since I looked at it.

One can use RAW to mimic the intent of the camera - to produce a pleasing, sharp correctly exposed image with low noise and stop there. However, if your intent goes beyond that and if you wish to achieve something different and thus if you need to process the image further, having RAW is a virtual necessity. Computational RAW like ProRAW has the advantage over regular RAW in that it integrates images taken by several cameras and several exposures. This computational trick brings the starting image closer in quality to the images created by a larger camera sensor and a zoom lens. I Expect to have a lot of fun with this, although I do not expect to retire my interchangeable lens camera anytime soon.
