And android 11 is just as small of an update, even less than the 10th iteration imo

AnonD-966113, 18 Dec 2020Just to save themselves from Exynos messcompetition paid off for the good of the end user. android users deserved to hear this for years. obviously, samsung is leading android business so, the others will follow the trend. today, we hear 3 year updates for flagships. I think next year, we will hear 2 year updates for mid-rangers.

Anonymous, 20 Dec 2020They already have 3rd party apps ready. Don't need to... moreYou literally have absolutely no clue what you're even talking about. What 3rd party apps when it's the OS that doesn't get the updates anymore?! Stop blindly defending garbage Android updating support done by pretty much all vendors including Google itself. You're all so hilarious, I come here and say Android should also have 5 years of proper updates and you people rush in to say you don't want that because Android is so much better and so much more advanced. Like, who gives a crap? It's totally irrelevant to the topic of longevity of software support. Stop acting like foolish fanboys and defending Android in every god damn post like it's your life project ffs. It's a product from mega corporations ffs, demand them to do better, not be more lazy. Jesus, you all literally don't get it at all. Yet still feel the need to literally say you don't want it to be better. I don't care if it's "better" and "more advanced" than iOS, it's garbage by itself when you don't compare it to anything. 3 years of updates as best possible case scenario. Baaaah. It's pathetic. 5 years should be the norm by everyone. I'm surprised you fools aren't saying 3 years is too much anyway and that they should actually decrease it to just 2 or one. That's the level of dumb defending of Android you're all doing...

Don't need to rely on manufacturers.
ToyPhone will never be as advanced as Android.

Anonymous, 18 Dec 2020You said that Android vendors wanted you to buy a new phone... moreYeah, with iPhone I really don't have to. They are fast and you get updates for stupid long time. This first iPhone is the first time I don't have updates anxiety like on every god damn Android phone I've ever owned where they just sacked all updates in 2 years of owning it. Some even only got 1 major update and that was it. And lastly, when there is iOS update, it's right now, for EVERYONE. On Android devices it's always this BS trickling of updates across not only weeks but MONTHS. Just because you happen to live in country X and happen to have provider Y with phone Z. It was always just absolute dreadful experience. You really have to live in an absolute ignorance bubble ignoring all and any news about anything tech related to be happy with it getting update whenever they feel to giving it to you.

Actually, Apple wants that, too. Anyway, the point is that you don't have to. Even if updates stop coming, you can continue using your phone for many years. iPhone users just get widgets recently. They could live without widgets for 10 years just fine.

And how many actual security updates will there be? All nice saying 3 years but is that every month or 1 every 3-4 months?

Earlier I thought it was some bug then I realized Apple actually considers this a feature.

It can be annoying during gaming. They are too cheap to put a proper cooling system inside.
What is the use of a bright screen if its going to go dim when phone heats up? Never had this kind of issue on Android devices.

                            I call this BS.

Why can't they bring security updates for Pixels for more than 3 years? Pixel 2 is EOL, while for the Nokia 3 for example (entry level model, costs 100euro) launched before the Pixel 2 security updates still came after more than 3 years after the release.

Limited number of years of updates has absolutely NOTHING to do with hardware support, and EVERYTHING to do with the hardware vendor putting up unnecessary and artificial roadblocks.

Desktop and laptop computers built 2 DECADES ago can still run the most modern and up to date operating system (i.e. kernel 5.10). So why can't phones?

The answer is that they COULD, if the needed hardware drivers were upstreamed in the kernel. A dragonboard 820c (Snapdragon 820, the same chip in pixel 1), works wonderfully with android 11/master on kernel 5.10. Hardware video acceleration provided by Mesa/Freedreno. So why not an actual pixel 1? The answer is this... The driver for the cellular modem is closed source.
