Weekly poll: smartphone design trends you'd hate to see continue in 2021

2020 saw some cool trends emerge in smartphone design, at the same time some annoying design choices started to become more common.

putting small batteries is the worst thing a OEM can do to ruin day to fay experience IMO

Eliminate the notch and punch hole. Keep expandable memory and 3,5mm jack, flat screen, and 5000mah+ battery.

Having 4 camera modules of which I'll use one, macro is a gimmick, ultrawide is also a gimmick.
My 2017 asus zenphone 3 zoom, 5000mah, standard and zoom lens, and affordable, wow. Didnt realise we peaked in 2017.
Fast charge doesn't help when you have no where to charge it

My number one on that poll is plastic constructions. I give it a pass if, and only if, the battery is removable. You can have plastic high end devices (having used the S20 FE 5G, I've found the plastic feel to be less of a problem than I thought it would, even if it doesn't feel nearly as premium as proper glass such as on my N20U) if the quality is still good everywhere else. Plastic is much less prone to serious damage too, which is definitely good for durability. Unfortunately, OEMs don't use it to benefit consumers, only themselves by still sealing their devices and charging premium prices.

Second one would be the extinction of smaller phones but not just in low-end. I really wish my N20U was smaller. Having the option of a more manageable but still premium device would be great. The base N20 was a scam, let's be clear on that, so it was a non-starter.
Useless camera sensors obviously, as it's just a marketing scam. Depth, macro, AI FoolMii 3D... no.

          ----
The rest isn't so bad. I can live without low quality headphones in the box and the lack of a charger but you should be able to request them if needed. There is a lot of e-waste generated by those things, there's a reason the EU made rules against proprietary chargers, and now seeks to unify all charging ports for mobile devices.
Dropping the telephoto lens... a bit harder but I'd give it a pass only on two conditions:
1- No advertisement of digital zoom as a replacement of optical zoom, or any such deceitful marketing ("Hybrid Optic Zoom", looking at you Samsung)
2- The replacement sensor is useful.
Not all telephoto lenses give good pictures outside perfect lighting conditions. The main sensor would often times do a better job than a bad 2x one.
Smaller batteries for faster charging... it might help devs getting their act together if we stopped giving them bigger batteries to compensate for their poor coding of the system and the apps. But I don't see the need for faster charging, unless you want to destroy the battery, which the OEM of your choice will gladly help you in doing so, seeing as they're still sealing the battery, translating in an expedited upgrade for when your battery dies.

But why rounded screen corners are missing from this list? Or holes, notches and curved edges and other screen defect which stop it being a perfect flat rectangle? Or glass back panels? Or on-screen controls? Or non-removable batteries? Unwanted trends are numerous and horrible.

If Apple really cared about the environment, they would have switched to USB-C instead of keeping the lightning port.

the most useless feature is the curved screen.

Android Authority, 27 Dec 2020Dropping the in-box accessories has to be the worst trend f... moreThey claim that it's for environmental purposes and everyone already has their own charger. Best of luck saying that for first-time customers. I myself have been thinking long, long time to buy an iPhone. But considering Apple's decision to not include a charger in the box, I don't think I'll be jumping on the iOS bandwagon anytime soon.

Where is the submit button? I can't submit my opinion from GSMArena App 😑

Easy: Useless camera module, dropping the telephoto camera, smaller batteries in favour of fast charging, and plastic chassis.

I really cannot understand the logic of putting a separate macro camera when the photo quality of it is worse than shooting a macro photo using the main or the ultrawide camera itself. The depth sensor is also a big joke - they say it's mainly for Portrait mode but I really struggle to see the positive benefit of it as a whole. I'd rather have the same sensor as the main camera but in Monochrome/B&W colour filter instead of a depth sensor. Nokia 9 PureView is a perfect example.

I have never been a fan of fast charging in the first place mainly because of its long-term concern, so I definitely wouldn't mind having a slower charging rate in favour of a much bigger battery capacity. Anything more than 50W of charging rate is total overkill for me.

Plastic chassis? Let's hope that we won't be seeing yet another OnePlus Nord fiasco. Plastic back is alright since that prevents shattering unlike glass, but plastic chassis? Probably not.

I'd say no small flagship phones, iPhone 12 mini is currently the only one on that throne.
I hope other Android phones makers copy this Apple's idea like they did with headphone jack and charger

Although I have selected the option of 'Dropping the in-box accessories' from the given options in this poll, one important thing is missing in the option is 'No more notched display'.
