'Ultra-Wide shouldn't be used for Macro'
- Shouldn't be used or not, the results speak for themselves (At least for now, in smartphone world). Yes the method are different than actual camera world, but its way way better implementation than those dedicated 2mp setup.

Personally, I have made a "meta zoom" that mitigate most "problems" that a regular zoom would encounter on a smartphone :

I've improved the concept since, but basically, you have both excellent Wide and Ultra-Wide capabilities while also having a big Telephoto Zoom reach that can also double as Portrait without the need for a "portrait/depth camera" and can also do Macro as well as a dedicated one.

Macro and Telephoto have a lot in common, if Smartphones had a Telephoto able to make super close focus and short Depth of Field, it would allow for amazing Macro shots at least as good as those of the Ultra-Wide take, and easily better.
Having too much Depth of Field isn't good in Macro, but a Telephoto can allow a better Depth of Field than a dedicated Macro and get an excellent result.
Ultra-Wide shouldn't be used for Macro.

Because DSLR exists, I'm surprised phone makers haven't thought to put one 40MP sensor that starts at Ultrawide but then zooms all the way to 3X optical while retaining solid quality (similar to the older Nokia phones).

Either way, other than the new Xperia, I'm not looking forward to this year in terms of smartphone. It's bad enough the US gets the worst end of the stick when it comes to mid-rangers but most of the flagships are not going to be good.

If they removed the headphones and charger from budget phones, we wouldn't bat an eye. Yet, for some reason, as we pay MORE for a phone, we lose the headphone jack, expanded memory, battery size shrinks, and we lose the charger and headphones. Never understood that.

Yeah, I have had this question in mind for so long as to whether some cameras were necessary to be on some smartphones just to add an Extra Unnecessary Cost, making them quite expensive for people like me, lolz.
