New leak shows Galaxy S21 Ultra case designed specifically for the S Pen

04 January 2021
The stylus will be available as a separate purchase - by itself or bundled with a case. And you'll want the case if you don't want to lose the S Pen.

cherry, 05 Jan 2021Would the pen work for S20 basic? No, it won't. As the earlier non-note version don't have a Wacom digitizer (an extra layer on the display) for the phone to support the S-Pen. You may however use other pen that mimic your finger touching the display.

silversurfhur, 05 Jan 2021well imagine the humungous opened flip cover beside your sc... moreI've had to get a similar case for my Tab S7. It is cumbersome but better than the stupid back charging option which encourages the loss of the pen. I had to get that case from Soke not Samsung.

However, for a phone, I would not buy a flip case. It gets in the way of day-to-day use such as camera. My Note 9 (and previous notes) have been perfectly safe with just a screen protector and a back cover, and that is all I ever want.

So long as such a back cover case can SECURELY hold the pen, then I'm happy if they use the internal space to give us a decent sized battery. After just over 2 years my note 9 battery now has an estimated capacity of only 3012 mAh compared to the original 4000! It barely lasts a day of light use.

I think this is a silly idea. If Samsung want to give S Pen support to S21 Ultra just make it store it internally like the Note series, and merge Note series with S series. Maybe have the S Pen as an external accessory for the S21+ and standard S21.

I have a Note 10+ currently, was tempted to get Note 20 Ultra but the increase in price to £1179 ( compared to the 10+ which was £999 and it's trade in value is only £350 now) put me off. Especially when there's nothing to justify that increase - some things are actually a downgrade like lower screen resolution if adaptive refresh rate is used, and no 2x/3x zoom camera so photos taken at focal lengths ideal for portraits such as 50 - 100mm equivalent can produce worse results as the phone is cropping from the main camera. I've seen a number of comparisons showing iPhone 11 & 12 models producing better portraits than the Note 20 Ultra as they have dedicated ~2x cameras. Only going up to the focal length of the periscope lens does the Note 20 Ultra then pull ahead.

I was therefore excited to hear S21 Ultra would have a dedicated 3x camera and S Pen support as I do use the pen a lot, thinking this could be a better buy then the Note 20 Ultra. This external pen storage solution is not for me though. I use a Pitaka magnetic case on my 10+ as I need to have my phone mounted in the car for work, so being able to have it attach magnetically to a wirelessly charging mount is incredibly useful. I used the Samsung flip cover back when I had a Note 8 but soon realised it was completely impractical to use with a car mount if it was necessary to view the main screen i.e for maps.

So when S21 Ultra is released I could get it and enjoy having better cameras which is a big feature for me, one of the main reasons I upgrade, but give up the convenience of having S Pen internally stored and hope some manufacturer will come up with a case that can store the S Pen and also work with a car mount, ideally a magnetic car mount like I already use, but even then such cases might be able to store the S Pen but not charge it, meaning it would need to be charged seperately or the Bluetooth features it has would be unavailable. Or I accept that I will have to carry the S Pen seperately which will have the same charging issue and most likely be forgotten or lost. Or I get Note 20 Ultra but miss out on the better camera setup, newer chipset and other improvements S21 Ultra will have. Great going Samsung, way to look after S Pen users that pay Samsungs's annoyingly high prices because they want to get the best specs. Now there is a choice which feature to lose out on - camera setup or S Pen. And it's a long wait til August when the next Note will be released - if it all if some rumours are to be believed.

You'd think with the new gen now supporting the S-Pen, Samsung will drop the Note series. So, S21 ('compact'), S21+ (bigger), S21 Ultra (the Note equivalent).

They should just call it the S21 Compact, S21, and S21 Note. Samsung releases so many phones, so they should at least streamline their flagship offerings...
