One of the reasons nobody uses f1.7-f1.9 for ultra wide or "zoom" on cellphones.
To prevent edges to have out of focus areas.

Easy to see on Samsung S9 when you switch between f1.5 - f2.4

They have prototypes with different setup.
    It was lack of competence.
Software part of AF was poorly done.
    Issue was solved.

Few years ago Samsung had best APSC camera. Do you really think they would not know how to deal with optics?

So is it impossible for smartphones to achieve 10X magnification? what would smartphone require to accomplish actual 10X magnification?

Btw S21 Ultra looks like a Lukewarm device.

Anonymous, 05 Jan 2021First generation attempts are usually rushed out. Its okay ... moreLol. Still s20 ultra has autofocusing issues, display issues, battery drain issues with laggynos. But look at Huawei's both (p40 n mate 40) flagships. They both had different hardware, design n software tuning still both of them have rocked. And many reviewers claimed that it's loss of consumers to not have such grt devices. N of course with no issues at all.

Magnification is the wrong term. Magnification is the absolute size of the image area of an object in mm in relationship to the real size of the object. Smartphone 5x cameras don't offer a magnification of 5x. And even in relationship to the main camera (comparing the absolute size of the image in mm) the magnification is NOT 5x as large. For example the 2x camera of an iPhone X offers a magnification that is only 1.5x as large as the magnification of the main camera (regarding distant objects). Smartphone periscope cameras usually have a magnification that is only 2x - 3x as large as the magnification of the main camera regarding distant objects. Therefore smartphone companies try to compensate for that by using a higher pixel density. Huawei's "10x" camera offers a magnification that is approximately 4x as large as the magnification of the main camera regarding distant objects.

                              What we really need is to drop the ultra-wide and get the 50mp 1.2um with F1.5/2.4 variable iris and 93 fov, a 64mp 1.0um 3x, and a 12mp 1.55um F4.0 6x

that laser AF is gonna fix those big aperture issues the S20 ultra had perfectly

That Exynos 2100 had better be something to write home about, particularly in terms of SOT, given the acute lack of development that went into the S21/S21+. We are already looking at a 2nd tier Xiaomi here. Fastest SOC, but mediocre cameras.

I don't care of samsung phones. Not anymore exciting and magical like in 2015,2016 (the last monsters). oppo find x3 pro will again trash s21 ultra. And not only Oppo will trash samsung again in 2021.
