There is no mess in the ratings. Neither are the ratings for PC hardware like SSDs/HDDs "regulated". Before you buy one, you should check if your Smartphone supports A2 speeds (otherwise, it will run with slower A1 speeds, like in your example). After that, look for Reviews at the model of (microSD/SSD/HDD etc.) of your interest.

Plastic back is actually a win. You don't have to worry about cracking the phone on the first drop. And if you are using a case, why would you care what the back is made of...

If you look at a current card, it has more icons on it than a 90's Windows desktop. Min speed, max speed, latency, bandwidth, iops, size.... The worst of all is, these labels are self regulated, so they don't even have to be true.
I have an alleged A2 rated MicroSD card, supposed to do at least 4,000 IOPS. Which is decently fast in comparison with old SSD or mechanical hard drives. Unfortunately, it barely scrapes over 1,000 when I test it.

S21 support USb on the go so You could get get External SSD 2TB for faster 2000 Mbps Write and read at same price for 1TB micro sd card.

I find it hard to stand that huge space wasted along the bottom right edge of the camera hump in the ultra model. Rest everything looks kind of good to me.

The main reason is that you can move huge & many files (for example 8K videos AFTER you recoded them) to the microSD, to safe space in the internal memory.
That also helps to move files within seconds from the phone to another device (PC, phone Camera, etc.) and vise versa. Which is very useful, especially during travel. Also Backups and many more things...
Now that the S21-series has fixed internal memory, i hope that Sony and LG get more costumers this year (they didn't ditched the microSD slot).
I am not even mad about the FullHD+ and the plastic back (both have their positives & negatives). But ditching the microSD has nothing positive at all.

Yes, I believe 4k is plenty. But some are happy to go higher and pay extra.
