        So basically just use another default text messaging app

          So let me get this straight...Google forces RCS onto their app and onto carriers, forces you to make it the default then is like, oh wait no we won't let you text soon.... really?

          What's next gonna force Google Phone app be used to make calls but those calls won't go through cause Google doesn't like you using your phone...

              F Google! They're trying to discourage unlocking our phones and installing our own privacy apps which they have no control to spy on or read our messages. I don't install GSM I have alternative apps & I use Carbon ROM without GAPS. Google business strategy is selling our DATA. IF IT'S FREE YOU'RE THE PRODUCT. Imagine the frustration of Google after offering the software for free & we "THE PRODUCTS" are not giving Google the our data. S#it

                They are probably working on completely shutting out uncertified devices and sideloading of apps. We must develop an open and consumer friendly alternative.

                      Latest for years now is Textra as it was fairly good customization for what I needed.

                        All my phones are Google certified. However, I use Signal as my default SMS app.

                                Stock Android's messages sucks. The app preinstalled in non stock Android is far better.

                                  Download Signal[or other apps] & set it as your default SMS.

                                  We need to tell Google, Facebook etc... that they can't dictate what we can use on our devices.

                                    People using Signal because of Google, Yay more for us.

They've always done that since the very early days of Android! That's why you always needed to sideload Google services into AOSP, if you wanted to use them.

                                      Furthermore, your examples are fundamentally flawed. Sony has proprietary apps with full-blown DRM. Samsung and Huawei also feature proprietary apps. By your own logic, aren't these also leaching out of Google's contributions, or is your argument so biased that you can't even see that?
