JDK, 21 Jan 2021Who thinks that the conversion to an inwards-folding screen... moreIt is a bad idea, but the tech is not yet there to support outwards folding screens.

The idea to have one camera for everything and only one screen is best, however current foldable screens are too unreliable to live exposed. So most choose the route of protecting the fragile foldable screen and install a more robust classical/glass screen putside.

*This* is the 1st gen of foldables. Once material design is where they let us have robust outward folding screen we'd have them + 3-folds, i.e. phones that turn into full fledged (instead of mini) tablets.

Lyndino, 21 Jan 2021Both folding and rolling screens are useless gimmicks. No ... moreYeah, people like small screens. That's why phones' screens keep on getting smaller and smaller each year, that is why making screens even bigger is useless.... oh wait, the opposite is going on.

I sometimes envy people who see the world like you do. Being capable to be extracting the opposite of what (really) goes on must be a considerable talent. I doubt (that) such people every worry too much in their life...

Having said that, the main reason those do not sell like hot potatoes is cost... literally nothing else. Even with their current (reliability) issues people would still buy them if they were on their budget. It's literally impossible to go back to the dingy screen of regular smartphones after having used a foldable... of course most of you wouldn't know, you're too poor to have owned a (trully) portable table (i.e. a folding one)...

Guest from the best, 21 Jan 2021Completely useless device. Plastic screen on back can be ea... moreSpeak for yourself. I have the Mate Xs as a daily phone since February 2020 and the screen doesn't have any scratches at all (Happy to upload a picture if you like). I use it for work every day, I have taken it to the beach, I have taken it to mountain hikes with no problems. the only thing you need to do is to use its leather case, even if you through it in your bag together with you keys (which is a ridiculous thing to do with any decent piece of equipment).
It is of course more fragile than a conventional mobile phone, but the screen of any phone will get scratches from keys and sharp objects of you don't pay attention. Like anything else, you need to use and not abuse.

The Mate 40 Pro PLUS is not even globally available yet, at least for most of the big countries/markets. Now they are talking about Mate X2.

                      [deleted post]You know it.

Inward folding screen? Seems like even Huawei realized that outward folding screen is not a good idea.

Completely useless device. Plastic screen on back can be easily damaged even by a ring on fingers or keys in pocket. No option for protective case. Just another One Day Phone for great money!

Interesting how they developed both an outward folding and an inward folding display. Hope their inward folding version is just as good as their outward folding one. Knowing Huawei, it will be good.
