Apple’s iOS 14.5 beta lets you set third-party music apps as default player for Siri

09 February 2021
Users always had to specify the player they wanted to use but now a third-party music app can be set as the default.

Most iPhone users do use Google's apps in the form of Gmail, Google Maps and YouTube.
Look at top 10 apps for iOS.
These 2-3 Google Apps are at the top of the list.

Anonymous, 09 Feb 2021One doesn't need to use Google Assistant to know that ... moreIt just sounds funny when you so confidently brag about a feature you don't even use or have any experience with. But you make sure to repeat whatever you heard from someone else like a religious gospel. Sounds awful lot like something fanboys do. Guess what, I used both, Google Assistant and Siri. But you don't see me bragging how iOS is superior or whatever. I just told it's useful for things I need it for and gets the job done to make life easier. But no, you just have to go with your Android superiority syndrome crusade. Heh.

AnonD-804996, 09 Feb 2021Congratulations, you read recent news about music app thing... moreFor most powerusers apple devices are a no-go, because of all kinds of restrictions, including inability to change the screen, now cameras, battery, etc. by yourself. Why is that? So that You can go to the local apple authorized service department to hear that You have to buy a new product, since the last one is unrepairable and You have no second opinion on that. And I know from first hand experience. I really like using macOS, I also have no quarrel with iOS (esp. jailbroken), M1 and A14 are really ahead in CPU/GPU, but the strings attached are over the top...

[deleted post]Congratulations, you read recent news about music app thing and now you're going big at it like "gotcha". Do you know how pathetic you sound? Also 1.1 billion users chose Android because it's cheap and used on anything from phone to a toaster because of that, not because of absolute superiority which makes your claim a bit of a moot point. I mean, it's not like they can pre-install iOS on their products even if they wanted to lol. And Android users keep reading your over inflated lies about iOS. It's why most users don't try iOS. It's why I haven't tried it for a long time. But once they are fed up with all the Android nonsense enough, they give iOS a try and most likely never ever return to Android. But whatever, enjoy your perpetual beta OS with zero real long term support. Basically Google in a nut shell.

It's like totally and entirely different thing. Apple was doing it to make Siri better at recognizing phrases. And that was pretty much it. The cockup was in the agreements and privacy policies that didn't state that obviously. Google is literally making billions straight out of knowing everything about you. I'd say it's a very different thing. But everyone is outraged over the Apple's thing and proceed to go on just handing out everything to Google. Heh.

I still haven't found any app which is better than the Apple app default. If I liked some third party apps better than those by Apple I could have bought an Android to use them as default. The Apple apps can only be found on Apple devices, no android can get them and thus pointless to use their default settings capabilities to run them.

Many differently abled people are really dependant to Voice Assistant, and in their community, there is no doubt that iPhone is the best tool when it comes to assistive functionality.

TechEnthusiast42, 09 Feb 2021Is anyone still using voice assistants? I mean, Siri was... moreI do, but for very mundane tasks. Like asking "what's the time" when I'm prepping for work and I don't have time to physically poke the display to see the time. Or "when is alarm set" when I'm already in bed and I'm unsure if I have alarm set to correct time. You know how hard it is to get out of cozy bed and check the phone physically that's 2m away on the desk... I often also use it when I do wake up and just tell it to set the timer to 10 minutes so I can sleep for 10 more minutes (there is probably voice snooze command, but I just use the timer). A lot of very first world tasks and problems, but it's handy. I mean, if it's there, I may as well use it.

There are however some annoyances with Siri. Like for example, when you're in a car and you'd like to pick up a call by asking it to answer and put it on a loudspeaker and it complains you have to unlock the phone first. I know I don't have BT/CarPlay in my car, but this should just absolutely work. Same for activating my robot cleaner. I should be able to send it out with voice yet Siri complains I'll have to unlock the phone to do that. Well, I may just as well activate it by fingering the display then... I'd use that, but oh well. Not end of the world.

One small feature for the customers, one giant leap for apple.😅

Is anyone still using voice assistants?

I mean, Siri was popular at the beginning, but I don't know anyone that used it more than a month or two until the novelty faded out. To me it's more of an annoyance, even after I disabled Siri, some apps keep asking me to add them to Siri.

I still know two or three people that use Alexa (and BMW assistant in the car I think, that's even funnier), but it's so weird, we all look at them as if they're crazy :))))

The main problem with assistants is that you're talking to an object, not to a person, which is not (yet?) socially acceptable everywhere.

Yes finally, why did they take so long to add this tho like why
