Weekly poll results: people say they want small phones, but that is not apparent in sales numbers

14 February 2021
Sales data for the iPhone 12 mini, perhaps the only proper mini flagship on the market right now, is not encouraging.

Hmm, so you say that small phone lovers are a very vocal minority, then what about smartphones with a headphone jack? Most new smartphones are dropping the headphone jack, even budget smartphones and those who want headphone jacks are also a very vocal minority. I'm willing to bet a trillion dollars that there are as many or even more people in the world who want a small phone as those want phones with headphone jacks.

in regards of the article the main problem is peoples want a small phone or even a iphone but 700$ on a phone it’s not what most people are willing to spend, maybe 13 mini will have some way paved out by the 12 mini and may sell much better

I hate what are now standard sized phones. I still use a Samsung young! I was considering the iPhone se but then I read about the battery. Sorry I don't want to have to charge at least once a day. My young lasts at least 3 days as I don't really use it for the web.

Small phones dont sell numbers because they lack competent specs. If small phones have minimum 4 gb ram and 64gb storage with 4000 mah battery the numbers will definetly increase.

It is strange that Sony is supplying cameras and camera sensors to other premium brands, but when it comes their own Phones it is not even worth mentioning the name.
As per the size of Mobile Phones it should be from 130mm to 145mm at the most. As per the price and specifications, it should be both the ways. A rich as well as normal person should be able to afford and use.

What we actually want is a flagship from our known brands with essential features... Things don't boil down to just size, there're ample factors involved.
To prove your point, you mention a no name Xperia Compact which doesn't lead in anything else but low size... Cameras almost rubbish, audio quality nothing worth of Sony name, RAM also low.
As if Sony's large screen phones are a hit in the market, is it? Nobody wants a Sony, big or small.

Today's problem is, they compromise on features to deliver a lower size, and people want it all, even if with a somewhat average battery.

GSMArena didn't write this article very professionally, please don't mind me saying.
Ample number of variables have been just ignored.

See, choosing an iphone to say that people don't wanna buy small phones is not correct, specially when Android holds 85% of the market share in numbers...

Think about it, How about checking S10's numbers? or S20?
Don't check S10e, its got seriously missing features so we can't count it.

Anonymous, 15 Feb 2021The newer is always smaller does not apply here. Not like... moreMostly true about the sensor, but the senor housing and other aspects of the camera technology have shrunk and become better optimized to fit into smaller cases over time. Likewise for the batter. That said, my comment about phone size was indeed about other components shrinking. As other components shrink (CPU, memory, display thickness/wraparound displays, etc), ports are removed (headphones and their related hardware, smaller USB connectors, fewer buttons so fewer connectors), and advances are made in cooling/space optimization, that allows other components to fit in even if they haven't shrunk.

wongwatt, 15 Feb 2021It's not incorrect, you might disagree but it's a... moreNo, what you said is incorrect. You stated a preference as a fact. Re-read what you said. You implied that bigger screens would automatically be preferably to people upon using a smaller screen. I have an iPhone 12 mini, which I switched from a Pixel 3 and iPhone xs. I much prefer typing on the 12 mini. In fact, I'd love for it to be a bit smaller still.

Hope to buy the 12S/13 Mini or whatever they call it. I use the zoom camera frequently, and the 12 having a wide lens instead held me back. If there were a 12 Mini Pro I would have upgraded already.

I opted for the 12 mini after having a Note 9. Phones were getting too big in my opinion.

First, 12 mini is not that mini after all. If Apple would make an iPhone 5 (5s, SE first edition) sized phone with 80+% screen-to-body ratio it will be more successful. Because it will be a real mini.

Second, nobody cares about all those cool specs as long as phone performs well. I mean - it would be enough to have internals of iPhone 8 or iPhone X if the form factor fits in mini category.

Third, battery, battery, battery. If Apple will not do something with those short off-grid usage hours - they can make whatever cool things they want. Phone should work 24 hours not 8. And I don't think there is a lot of potential buyers who will object to have 3... 5 mm thicker phone if it brings Android level off-grid time.

Fourth, yes - in Android stable there is nothing to offer. Samsung S10e was the last which was something close to something that could be called mini but it was 2 years ago already. So all eyes on the potential Sony compact phone. But again - if it will have such an insane price tag like Xperia Pro - forget it.

                              Well...
                              - This article doesn't make sense at first place.
                              - this article is based only on 12mini sales figures.
                              - iphone mini 12 with another telephoto camera, higher capacity battery, 6GB RAM option could have turned tables for 12 mini.
                              - for years people were forced to use big phones when they wanted to switch
                              - people got used to big phones that moving to smaller one is not pleasing for them.
                              - the current small phone owner need a similar phone but there is not single phone with same internals.
                              - there is no budget or mid range small phones.
                              - There is no small android phone. Pixel 3a had received better response.
                              - only expensive small phones currently
                              - all these years we had only xperia compact phones which were expensive & Sony was in poor state to pull the game to get the sudden market gain.

with larger phones there is no such problems. They have plenty of options and available in all price segments.

So people are moving to larger phones as there is no small phones options available.
Yes people get used to larger phones but will loose the compact feeling of small phones that can never be replaced.

iphone 12mini is near to perfect in form factor but not everyone want it.
