Weekly poll results: people say they want small phones, but that is not apparent in sales numbers

14 February 2021
Sales data for the iPhone 12 mini, perhaps the only proper mini flagship on the market right now, is not encouraging.

Sony = last compact to sell as much as bigger brother was z5c. X Compact, XZ1c and XZ2c were much behind their big versions.

Apple = iphone 12 mini is sold everywhere (except NK). It is failure considering how much each iphone model sells. Big flop like 5c.

Screen of 12 Mini is similar to a 5.1" 16:9.
Some ppl here want 90/120Hz?
Even if the phone was thicker, it would not have more than 2500mAh.
This would never be enough to handle 90/120Hz.

Sales only from I phone which costs a thousand bucks is supposed to prove something? Not to mention the inflated prices. Most people don't want to spend the entirety of their life savings on a phone.

Galaxy S10e was the last good compact with zero compromises and a moderate battery life. If anything, any Android company can model after that in the near future. If flagship processing is getting smaller, it's weird that nobody wants to take advantage.

Take LG. If they made a V70 mini like this:

      LG V70 mini:
6.0" P-OLED panel, 19:9 ratio with 1080p@120Hz with minimal yet symmetrical bezels; Gorilla Glass 6 front/Vectus on the back
      Snapdragon 888 with global bands
      8GB RAM/128GB ROM - 8GB RAM/256GB ROM w/ microSD card slot
      IP68 and MIL-STD-G
      Graphene layer for cooling

      Stereo speakers
      Headphone jack with DAC

      64MP or 108MP main sensor
      48MP Ultrawide
      16MP telephoto with 3X zoom

      32MP selfie cam
IR sensors for facial recognition (hence the bezel)

4,000mAH battery with 25W/15W/10W charging speeds (might make the phone a teeny bit thick but that should be fine)

For $800/$850; $900/$950 in the US/SK due to mmWave

I guarantee it would sell pretty darn well because it has all the hardware and a solid battery (888 being with the integrated 5G modem).

I just want there to be choices for everyone.

Mayur, 14 Feb 2021They can increase the thickness for battery.Yes, to fit a bigger battery in small screened phones they can make it 1-2mm thicker, cut the wireless charging and use a metal unibody (because the aluminum body is thinner and so needs less space compared to glass backsides). In my eyes a little but smaller pixel 5 (68x140mm) with SD870/888 would be fine with no less than 4.000mAh battery.

You'd think Xiaomi would have capitalized on the obsession of some people on the smaller form factor, and yet their size-equivalent phone to the 12 Mini is the lowly Redmi 8A, that's it! Not a shrunken down Mi 10T, Mi 11 or Poco F2 Pro, a Redmi that chokes on itself when it tries to run Subway Surfers!

JJC, 14 Feb 2021A 6 inch screen with minimal bezel would suit most people. Yeah, but the stupid companies don't see that. All profit oriented. But that thing would sell like hot cakes!

To be fair, the normal iPhone 12 or the iPhone 12 Pro already are fairly compact and pocketable compared to many other phones out there. Same for the Galaxy S21.
The size around 145mm in length and 70mm in width is a great compromise between screen real estate and a handy size.

There's no use spending resources for an obscene amount of R&D to cram adequate cooling, cameras, and especially battery sizes in a smaller chassis when they have far more freedom in creating super large phones like Mi 10T and Mi 11...

Like, I want a compact phone, but I don't want a 700$ phone with 60Hz screen. According to some statisticians, I apparently don't want a compact phone then. Sigh.

Surely with the slim bezels and notch, there is more screen estate. GSMArena says the
12mini has a 71.9cm2 screen area, whilst the iPhone 8e only has a 60.9cm2 screen area, and the old regular flagship Samsung S7 also has a smaller 71.5cm2 screen area too.

There's no one here that will say the S7 has a small display. So why complain?
If this is about the widescreen content not fitting on the weird notched aspect ratio, well, you people only have yourselves to blame for supporting that trend.

12 mini is too small and too expensive, SE is useless because of the battery (and screen could be bigger without affecting overall dimensions), Sony and Pixel are hard to find or kind of expensive (considering the specs)

Iphone 7 and 8 were more exp... moreiPhone 7 and 8 were 649$, so less than 12 mini, and more importantly, they were the flagship iPhones at their release time. 12 mini is the cheapest of the iPhone 12 series. Another reason is the mere 100$ difference with iPhone 12 non-mini - that's a very small difference and most people will pay it to get a 6.1" screen. The price is definitely the problem with the 12 mini.
