Touch screen is not really necessary, but it helps alot if your are writing in languages other than the major ones like english or french. It can be a royal pain in the as*, to key in every stroke or use some ridicolous pronunciation program. It not a necessity but rather a luxury. Although the P1i is lacking in features, touchscreen phones should follow that concept where both touchscreen and a normal keypad are needed!

Nokia and proper UI's just don't mix!Touchscreen is brilliant on the iphone and sure isn't half bad on winmob handsets.It's so much faster to navigate with touchscreen.For web browsing and apps like remote desktop its a must.The majority of nokia users won't take to touch as they don't use their devices for anything more that fun

finaly nokia find a way to touchscreen, but what is this, is a mobile or a laptop? strange, is so so big... horrible

Touchscreen is just a fad right now, thanks to the overmarketing from Apple. It is a fad like flip phones, sliders, and anything "thin". The most practical reasons to add touchscreen is to have more screen size. It can be messy just to clean up everyday. After get the masses finally get over their touchsreen phase, I wouldn't be surprised if they go back to actual buttons with touchscreen being "optional". I am waiting for phones with 3-D holygraphic images like the ones we see in Star Wars... Probably not in my lifetime or when I get super old.

Geez....
Am I the only person left that could care less about having a phone with touch-screen?
If you look at electronics with TS, such as cash registers, ATM machines, computers, etc...the TS seems to get more & more unresponsive as the device gets older, & the touching the screen to use a function take more & more touches as time goes on.
I like the tactile feedback from buttons on a phone. Having a phone with TS ranks somewhere with having infrared on a phone IMO.

re:the guy using hTC - I am using an older win mobile touchscreen (with 'the pen') - and I agree - I would never use another - keypad is the perfect solution for this size -

Ive always been a Nokia fan. They have great features. Although i have to admit the software for the iphone is phenomenal. This software still looks CRAP compared to that of the iphone. Sorry nokia, FAIL.. try again. I wish they make it at least at par with the iphone so i can buy a Nokia. They always do have one of the best features.

with an Attitude like that Vice President you aint gonna be Selling well.

after i have been using htc for 6 monthes, i have to say touch screen is not necessary in a phone, its even unpractical. or maybe is it because of windows mobile.. i like normal keepad much more, one hand use is easier...

The actual iPhone doesn't have all modern features too ;-)
But on the other hand Nokia could launch a full featured phone, like the 7650 from 2002. It had allmost all of the features from that time, except memory card slot

i presume that the tube wont have all the features that the n96 and the n95 have. if it does have all the features of the n96 and has external keys to operate it,then i'll buy it for sure.

It's good to see that nokia is finally developing a phone with touchscreen. Competition among different companies to develop a good phone is good for all of us (consumers) as we will have more choices to choose from with more competitive prices. For now, I'm waiting to buy sony ericsson's new touchscreen phone. I hope nokia can release their's soon.

yeah but this phone has multi-touch, its just enginnered differently to the iphone as not to conflict with any patenting any stuff so i dont think responsiveness is going to be an issue.

YIKES I hate her English. But ok, lets stay objective here. :)
Interface reminds me of SU990 and/or Prada by LG. Even the colour scheme.
Atleast they made nice little transition animations in the GUI, simmilar to those found on iPhone (JesusPhone).
Come on Nokia, im sure you can do better,.. make it robust, but make it robust to a point. Its 2008. Age of graphics accelerated interfaces like compiz/beryl, OSX Leopard,...
Im not here to rub it in as this clearly is a work in progress UI and looks too cumbersome (not user friendly) to use. Im sure Nokia will come around.

i have played with iphone (gf's phone) and i do agree, iphone touch interface seems more responsive. Other manufacturers should learn from iphone with respect to touch interface.
BUT, too bad iphone is short on other feature:
lacks decent camera (simply horrible!)
no video recording capabilities
compatibility issues
no third party applications
and so on . . .
I CAN'T say iphone is lightyears ahead. it just have a better touch interface, but its lack of other feature is a major drawback which pulls down its advantage and makes it a "so-so" phone by today's standards. No offense!

Sorry, if you have played with an iPhone - it is light years ahead. The responsiveness, the consistency (almost perfect) and the stability. Apple are doing to the handset market what they did to the MP3 player market, creating a device that does what it says on the box with as minimal hassle as possible. While Symbian is a welcome alternative to MS Windows Mobile, if my SE P990 was anything to go by, it has some serious stability issues. I don't know why Apple don't license iPhone OS to Nokia. Of course, that will never happen, but it would help them both.

sounds interesting! at least the whole touch interface would have another strong competitor, a threat for other companies but beneficial for consumers because this usually means that each brand would strive harder to make their product better! ( so guys, let the companies fight against each other )
since i'm a "touch-screen fan", i would definitely look forward to this. However, knowing that this is the "first" touch UI phone of nokia, i would be more of an observer than a tester. Because it is a well known fact that the first batch of technology for a company is usually plagued with problems and the consumers are usually the test subjects to evaluate the product.
just my thought!

apple iphone and all touch based devices have seriously underpowered touch screens which only register one touch just go to youtube and type Jeff Han and you will see what a real touchscreen is!

God, some of the posters below need to grow up. I mean, I like Sony Ericsson but thats no reason to bash Nokia for making advancements. talk about jealousy.
