Weekly poll: how much storage is enough?

14 February 2021
We're interested in built-in storage specifically, but would like to hear your thoughts on microSD slots and cloud storage as well.

    Minimum 256gb

AlienKiss, 20 Feb 2021The SD card is not designed to install apps on, though you ... moreNo, you cannot install apps directly on the MicroSD card on every phone. Sure if you install another ROM you can, but not everyone does that.

And your point doesn't make any sense. "If you have a pc, wouldn't you rather have SSD + HDD, rather than just one SSD??"? My point is there should be at least 128 gigs if the phone has a MicroSD card slot. I would've said there only needs to be 16 gigs if a MicroSD card solved all your storage needs, but I also said it needs 128 gigs less if it does have a card slot.

And then you go on about speed? When did I ever mention speed?

And no I never said I didn't think MicroSD cards should be a feature.

Stop putting words in my mouth. You're being annoying.

And if you wanna transfer data from old to new phone there is phone backup on your Google account. Need sd to keep your family photos? Google drive or external SSD/HDD/Flash memory. SD cards are practically useless and aren't necessary at all.

It's main purpose is to have more storage space from a DIFFERENT source. If you break your phone beyond repair, you just insert the SD card in a new phone.
I have everything on my SD card: photos, videos, movies (whole series), torrents, android kits, windows kits, music, audio books, documents, scripts etc. And yes, regularly I save everything on my pc with a simple script that I wrote.
If you have a pc, wouldn't you rather have SSD + HDD, rather than just one SSD??
And don't tell me it's waaaay slower. Oh wow! It takes 1, maybe 1.5 seconds to load more than 10k photos on my phone. 1 second slower than the internal memory! Unless you're doing quantum physics on your phone where you need every nanosecond, then you're good to go. Trust me!
I simply don't understand why you would rather have LESS features for MORE money. I'm no cheap person, but you're simply ILLOGICAL..

I think Nextbit Robin was ahead of it's time.
I do not use much internal storage as I am not a "photographer" nor playing games on my phone, my music comes from online, but still have a few downloaded offline, not watching movies or anything but If I would, streaming services like Amazon Prime, Netflix available + you still can add your own library on Plex if you pay Premium for mobile app.

Anonymous, 14 Feb 2021Never experienced issues with MicroSD. A feature you don... moreI was simply explaining why SD cards aren't a magical route to unlimited storage. I take it whatever phone you had apps on the MicroSD card on wasn't a recent one.

                Guys,
Always verify that you get original memory cards. Fake ones are becoming so regular that you'd get one from even your favourite online/offline seller. I've used 7-8 memory cards in my life from brands like Samsung, Sandisk, Sony, etc. and not even one failed yet.

But I also got a fake Samsung delivered from an online seller and I immediately applied for a replacement and got original one in return... I identified it from the packing and printing quality.
The buyer should be more aware.

And stop giving useless excuses like what if your phone gets stolen, memory card data will be stolen too... What if you lose your brain's memory in a road accident, then your cloud data will be gone too (password forgotten)? What if you die tomorrow, then everything will be lost, cloud or local or otherwise...?

Memory card is the better overall solution, and the reasons I'm reading in favour of cloud are practically rubbish, they ignore some aspect or the other...

Dometalican, 15 Feb 2021Bingo. It seems backwards to offer microSD on mid-rangers t... morePlanned obsolescence could be one reason? They don't want to give everything in one device, with midrangers you're likely to replace the phone quicker for speed or so..

Other reason could be to save weight and size, on already a very heavy feature set...

‘Enough’ is a moving target, but for my expected usage over the next 3 years, 256 GB (or a smaller amount + a microSD slot) is probably more than sufficient.

They can remove the slot, but they shouldn't charge the same or more for it

Really, 16 Feb 2021When you want something safe to make a backup use cloud sto... moreWe want the SD card slot as a secondary storage space, not necessarily for backups, but for storage purposes! Clearly you have nothing to do with technology or programming.
If you're experiencing problems with your SD card, that's because you were cheap and didn't buy an original, but a fake. That's why you have bad transfers, SD corrupted etc. I've never experienced any of these issues with an original SD card.
Also, if you are not able to keep your phone in your pockets and let others steal it, you don't deserve an expensive phone. You're not responsible enough..
This is 2021 grandpa! Nowadays, you do everything on your phone. PCs are only used for photoshoping or running major programs that are not available yet on mobile. But that will soon change as the processors on the phones are becoming more and more powerful.
If you only use the phone part in a SMARTphone for it's most basic function (calls and texts), then go buy an entry phone or an iPhone and let others use it's SMART features...
                        Welcome to the future!

It’s not reasonable for Samsung to remove their microSD slot from their latest high end phones. It happened once around 2012-13 for one generation and then they brought it back per their customer’s demand.
Having the option to expand your memory for general content, especially in phones that generates high capacity content (ie 4K and 8k videos) is crucial for a fair customer’s experience.

Anonymous, 15 Feb 2021Wait a minute........ the entire Wikipedia is only 30 GB??????It depends on which one you download. English Wikipedia with all articles and photos is 80 GB. English Project Gutenberg (public domain books) is 62 GB.
                                  https://wiki.kiwix.org/wiki/Content_in_all_languages

I often can't get downloading in the Kiwix app to work but a app Torrent works. Move the files to Android/data/org.kiwix.kiwixmobile/files/Kiwix/.

The entire Earth in OsmAnd+ with the most detailed maps, hillshade layer, and contour lines layer is only 360 GB.

So yeah, you can put a good chunk of Earth's knowledge on your phone with a 1 TB microSD card and still have hundreds of GB left over for music, videos, photos, or a copy of your laptop computer.
