but you might want to read the common aspect ratios here https://www.dacast.com/blog/video-aspect-ratio/
other references call 21:9 as cinema ratio...
i have few collections of movies having that aspect ratio which i have on my z5 premium (so there are black bars above and below the intended screen for the movie)... and it looks perfect on my 1ii...

21:9 is horrible. the more common 19.5:9 is also pretty bad. We need to go back to the 16:9 to 18:9 range. More than half of the screen is unreachable on giraffe phones and the keyboard is tiny in portrait mode (since it's scaled to the width of the device).

Movies are a niche use case on phones anyway. Nobody watches a movie on a phone when they have other options. Shorter youtube style videos (which are typically 16:9) are much more common. Also they are often viewed in portrait mode where the width of the phone determines the scale of the cropped video area.

But my problem isn't even specifically with 21:9, it's just that the phones are so narrow. I want a wider phone, but with 21:9 such a phone would be extremely long, so 16:9 makes more sense in this case.

About the photo and video taken by the phone itself, it's obviously 4/3 since it's how the sensor are made. So the black bars are always there, even with old 16/9 phone. Unless you crop it (like so phone does automatically, but that always lower the quality), and that's something you can also do with 21/9 ratio. At least, it's always better than the half-assed ratios between 16/9 and 21/9 that follow absolutely no standard at all and will always create horizontal or vertical black bars depending on the content.

pan dv, 12 Feb 2021perhaps better grip when holding one hand... multiwindow i... more21:9 isn't really the standard for any content. I have a 21:9 phone, but the videos and photos it takes aren't even close to 21:9. Stuff like social media and websites can adapt to different screens, so they don't really have any particular standard proportions, they can work on anything. But basically anything non-adaptable, with fixed proportions, looks bad on 21:9.

multiwindow is also a thing already...
and the "very long" content standard is 21:9... so it still covers the longest phone aspect ratio as of now...
for social media, you also get the entire display...

This looks interesting, but whyyyy do phone companies keep making phones longer and longer, but still narrow. Most content isn't made for these proportions. If you watch a movie, look at photos, read scanned books or comics or other documents, you're just going to get a lot of empty space at the top and bottom of the phone, while the actual content is still tiny because it's scaled to fit the phone's width, which is very narrow.

Why just limit ourselves to rectangle phones with foldable screens when we could have an 8 sided a rubix cube design instead? whats better than a phone with screens on 2 sides? 8 sides obviously, or you could buy the slightly less expensive triangle shaped phone which is just as innovative and sits in your pants very comfortably.
