Samsung explains how the upgraded Single Shot mode on the Galaxy S21 phones works

13 February 2021
AI engines have been trained on large datasets of photos to learn to recognize a good photo and how not-so-good ones can be adjusted.

This is like connecting a caravan to your car to go shopping. Both versions of "Photo" on the S20+ take masses of frames for every photo I take! My data is overflowing & I will resort to removing all Samsung photos from my cloud storage. What a train wreck from a so-called improvement. I trust somehow this can be disabled. I can't see the answer on the web so I hope my Samsung dealer can find an answer.

Anonymous, 16 Jun 2021I HATE this feature! I lost critical work data because it ... moreI just want to 'point and shoot' a single frame photo, not have to pick through a series of shots and pick out one to keep while individually deleting the other frames in each shot. Whether I use Single shot or Photo shot, the result is still a mini video from which I have to pick the one frame I want. Maybe I'm missing something but since the phones don't come with a manual, damned if I can figure it out.

I HATE this feature! I lost critical work data because it wouldn't let me just take a normal picture.

What is the point if I buy expensive phone and I have to spend more time for the camera, Sorry I have a lot other things to do, I prefer to have smarter camera, and u think how many people will think the same? It is good to have pro camera option but the auto mode must be good too. And back to ur first statement, the phone with good pro mode is also expensive but I still prefer to have phone can provide good raw image that I can edit later. R u still laughing?

Nick Tegrataker, 14 Feb 2021Being the largest smartphone company and producing a phone ... moreNo, they've been the largest manufacturer since forever. That's a weird conclusion.
This phone just stands out compared to what phones have been able to do. Give you photos that are actually so good you'd sometimes prefer them over some DSLR cameras.
I'm not saying it's perfect in any way. Samsung's insistence on using too much jpeg and mpeg compression on photos and videos is strange. If you take your time to learn to use the Pro mode and save photos as RAW, the camera really comes to life.

Also, the proces... moreI found your remark on greyscale comparison interesting, although many other phones I compared it to (iPhone 12 Pro Max, Mate 40 Pro, Mi 10 Pro etc.) also seem to have chosen lower overall exposure than S21 Ultra so I have a slight doubt about it having "better" dynamic range. I wish GSMArena equalised the exposure level on all devices, but I guess that
I just wish Samsung goes easier with post processing in the next Note series, especially for the Exynos variant - oversharpening gives people an illusion of more accurate subject focus and better captured details, but it has a detrimental impact on lines and textures which becomes clearly visible as you start zooming in. They were on the right path with Note 20 Ultra but then somehow decided to backtrack and go berserk with sharpening on S21U, and it clearly shows on GSMA's comparison chart. It's about time for them to stop this nonsense.

People just need to learn how take a photography decently. If they got flagship they should use the most out of it's camera feature too, I mean it'd be a waste if people ain't using those right? They paid a large sum of money for their flagship phone.

Apple has the popularity and in fact many people have pit iPhones against dedicated cameras in the past, but people aren't expecting a lot from a relatively small 12MP sensor. On the other hand, Huawei has a great camera but the ongoing ban means its availability is non-existent for western audience so it doesn't make much sense to produce such reviews in the first place.

I've seen one of those comparisons on YT. As with the case of all the other "phone vs dedicated camera" comparisons, the image quality was far better from the actual camera, but it was a really fun video to watch nonetheless.

Also, the processing has also improved vastly. Except the very corners of the image, I found its imaging to heads and shoulders better than all other smartphones cameras around. On the Comparison Tool, I checked out the daylight and lowlight photos, and the dynamic range is way better than all other smartphones around. By noticeable 2-3 stops in the grey scale. Which means a Lot.

One reason Samsung got it right this year is the better combination of lenses. They complement each other a lot better than the setup on the S20.
