Exynos 2100 vs Snapdragon 888: Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra sustained performance and throttling test

21 February 2021
We did some torture testing on the two variants, just to see which one holds-up better under sustained load.

MrDong, 24 Feb 2021Actually considering the optimisation of the game no device... moreNo, the drivers matter a lot. Vulkan was supposed to be low level api for better performance but its worse than opengl on android. While apple can improve their own api better. I still get the random freezes too, but its like once or twice in a few hours. Nothing much.

The iphone 11 pro max runs at 1731 x 800 according to geekerwan. And op8 pro at 1584 x 720.

Shadowgun legends isnt as good looking as genshin though. Its like dead trigger, making use of textures to mask the low poly models and the draw distance is low too. Poor lighting.

Does techtablets do fps and power measurement?

In fact iOS initially had very many issues, not sure if it's caused by iOS or the game. Even until now my iPhone 11 randomly freezes and that's not throttled because it's running at very high graphics settings. My SD865 Samsung had graphical glitches but it only happens occassionally. The iPhone does run smoother, I assume it's the 828p res but neither phone has good thermals truth to be told.

There are other demanding games such as Shadowgun Legends. I heard the iPhone 11 Pro Max struggled to hit 60fps at ultra despite being an optimised game overall. Not sure which iOS version is running (initial 13 build has issues), but the A13 had either bad thermal or memory management.

Ultimately the A14 didn't have any of these issues, its TDP is extremely low at load compared to competing chips, and passive cooling almost do not affect throttling (because it already throttles little). Never seen any SGL tests for the iPhone 12.

I won't rely on Golden Reviewers videos too much. His tests are sometimes not done systematically. TechTablets is an iPhone hater yet I have seen a lot better results from an iPhone (12 Pro Max) because he done the tests right.

MrDong, 24 Feb 2021I really don't care about that game, as a long-term pl... moreI have been playing since release, have had a lot of bugs and random fps drops ever since, on sd855. Nothing gamebreaking or making the game difficult. The games easy, got a lot of exploration, decent story, flashy moves, good graphics, theres nothing else like it on the play store. Poco x3 is good enough for 30 fps max graphics( Maybe its worse now, golden reviewer tested on old version).

I'd rather see how the game i like performs rather than random numbers on antutu/geekbench/3dmark/speedtestg. The ios version is atleast 1 level above android version in max graphics, so its not really a fair comparison, but it never was fair when android is running on opengl or vulkan and ios gets all the advantage it can from metal. I wish golden reviewer made longer gameplays though, the iphone can probably maintain that 45 fps for an hour looking at how low the power consumption is.

Also what other game is more demanding? I have seen some like ark, madout, and brightridge. Too bad he didnt test those. Techutopia tests everything but its hard to find what hes testing on which video. Its a mess.

There's a new module in Galaxy Labs called Thermal Guardian - here you can control how quick the Exynos throttles. Could be interesting to see if it makes a difference, which it should.

Mediatek sux, 23 Feb 2021A14 in the iphone does throttle hard in genshin. But thats ... moreI really don't care about that game, as a long-term player and already said I am aware of the optimisation issues. I use a Snapdragon 865 device to play the game and it throttles even harder. Golden Reviewer videos are too amateur, best if you don't trust his videos.

If a phone cannot play smoothly in one game but does the others (demanding games) well, then we can't say that phone is underpowered. I'm not defending the iPhones, because you can just check the players reports in the official forums.

roadrunner, 23 Feb 2021if you want a real comparison check out this golden reviewe... moreSorry to say this but the quality of Golden Reviewer reviews/videos in general is actually still quite amateur.

I mean in the video link you gave, he could at least use a selfie stick or similar (that holds 2 phones), we don't have much idea which S21U has better stabilisation. Moreover the main issue with the S21U Exynos is either the stabilisation at 4K/8K or the jittering.

The performance tests are not systematically done in optimal conditions as well. Also the only demanding game being used is Genshin Impact. I am already aware of the optimisation issues and graphical glitches/bugs/freezes in that game. Just check the official forums (I have also played the game since 2 weeks after launch). I would rather test with other better optimised games such as Shadowgun Legends.

Oh, so Exynos is still way worse than Snapdragon. I bought last year S20+ in Europe, meaning Exynos version and I'm heavily unimpressed with it. Had S9+ since launch and was working much much better. Even my older HTC M9 seemed to handle things better for its time while throttling.
Thank you for this article, this year no upgrade, and next year I'd have to wait again for this sort of test. I'm also unhappy with the dip in RAM. Even if you'd think 8GB is enough, I had 12 last year and in no way I'm paying 400 euro more this year to get the 16GB version or 300 to get the SAME amount of RAM lolz.
Samsung made big bad bumbum even bigger.

It's not just the performance issue in the Exynos version, the camera performance has been subjected to issue. Not sure if Samsung has fixed it but there were jitters during 4K/8K recording and the quality is poor. SD models didn't suffer from the issue.

Then the real score is actually 640k below, just look at the reviews, not to mention any throttling. You also have the Mediatek benchmark cheating scandal in Antutu last year.

Yeah right, this is what happens in an open-source platform. Then as soon as the iPhone wins in a single benchmark, they will call that benchmark biased 👏

It's manufacturer that should be grateful to consumer for purchasing their product, not the other way round. And Samsung was very ungrateful to most of their consumers by offering inferior model for the higher price.

Other than the 4MB L3 Cache on the SD888 and Exynos some points you mentioned was not explicit even in Anandtech. This does not make Qualcomm’s partnership with Nuvia too promising, nor AMD with Exynos.

TSMC chips, Apple has increased die sizes on the A14 significantly so while the suggested performance jump is only 18%, the actual increase is significant. A14 does not have a thermal throttling issue, compared to the A13 in the iPhone 11 series (that one is quite bad). Huawei’s Kirin 9000 also has a good memory subsystem. 3DMark will tell you that it scores only about 50% and GsmA’s review suggests throttling, but it turns out that both sustained performance and TDP are excellent.
