Exynos 2100 vs Snapdragon 888: Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra sustained performance and throttling test

21 February 2021
We did some torture testing on the two variants, just to see which one holds-up better under sustained load.

Real world usage is different from the benchmarks numbers so I don't believe this review.

So interesting thing I noticed this weekend.
            my brother has an S21.
I have a mate 20 pro. It's 3 years old at this point.

I play a lot of pokemon go. Like 8 hours a day.

This weekend there was an event (Kanto event)
So we went out in 32°C weather and played a lot of pogo.

The S21 started thermal throttling after about an hour. To a point where he turned off the phone and put it in water for 10 mins to cool down.

He did this 5 times. I never needed to do this. I could run my phone on a power bank in the sun and play comfortably from 9am until 9pm. He could play for an hour at a time then take a 10 min break.
And if he was charging that was 30 mins max until it was too hot to use the screen. Lots of visual lag for him one for me.

            He has the international version.

You want a true sustainable test of a phone? Take it out on a hot day and grind pokemon go hard to see how it does. Nothing really puts your phone though more real world load than pogo. GPS, screen brightness, loads of animation and cpu load to connect with the server.

When you will do an in depth cameras comparation between the two models? I am sure there are significative differences between the two hardware versions.

Watch Gary Explains Speed Test G stress test on the S21 Ultra SD vs. Exynos.

In case of this benchmark, the stability behaviour is identical except on the last few loops, but the Exynos performs at least 10 seconds slower overall. Unfortunately the test do not measure surface/CPU temperatures but this gives a picture about the throttling behaviour.

Overall the ROG Phone 3 still performed a lot better with the older chipset, but it was the iPhone 12 which aced in this benchmark. Least throttling overall with 64 seconds running cool, and 67-68 seconds under load running the benchmark for ~2 hours.

No they are not, or the same could be said about ur SD865 cause 855 is enough. Then again 845 is still enough and 835 same as above.

The fact that almost 50% of full performance is lost just by some simple stress test is not a funny joke for a 2021 flagship phone.

Anonymous, 22 Feb 2021You are correct in saying that gaming isn't the only t... moreNahh, even simple photo and video editing is going to stress the CPU enough to its limits.
Phones' functions like 4K 60fps video recording, fast image processing, etc. are utilizing a lot of CPU power, and 8K recording is now possible because the CPUs are powerful enough to handle it, but they are going to be maximized in order to sustain it.
Gaming is just a common way to stress the CPU, but it's definitely not the only way to do it.

Who would edit photos and videos on smartphones? Basically anyone who finds it convenient to do everything in one device.
I'm not paying a thousand dollar for a phone that can't even handle simple and quick photo and video edits in cases where I need to rush things or suddenly get in a situation where I didn't bring my laptop.
If you won't need all the power of a flagship phone's CPU, then why even bother buying a flagship in the first place?

phone with SD865 is the most ideal.

SD888 is very hot in heavy apps, which then cause effects to performance.
                                      Meanwhile Exynos performance drop faster.
