Weekly poll results: 128GB is the new sweet spot for base storage, microSD cards still important

21 February 2021
A bit over two years ago 64GB was considered a fine starting point, but now people are aiming at 128GB and higher.

Anonymous, 21 Feb 2021Give us a SD card with the speed of sata SSD and then I wil... moreIt won't be possible for now with the given size constraints of micro SD cards, but why would you even need such ridiculous speeds anyway? Micro SD cards aren't supposed to be used for internal storage anyway, and the files that you will keep there are the things that won't need extremely high read and write speeds for fast accessibility.
How about reserving the internal storage of your phone entirely for the whole system and have your personal files saved on the micro SD card instead? Wouldn't that make your phone faster since you're freeing up a lot of space inside your phone's built-in memory?

Duh, can't believe one need a poll to tell Android users want expandable storage, while vendors are becoming more Apple by the days till, one day, people no longer see the point of choosing Android any more.

A big internal storage is all i need, just look at that samsung s10 1 TB , that's beyond everything tbh

Anonymous, 21 Feb 2021Give us a SD card with the speed of sata SSD and then I wil... moredo you know what all high end cameras use as storage? ofc not. you never heard of it.
and why would you want sata speed on your phone in first place .name one use for it.

the most storage i've used is 270gb on my ROG phone 3 and that's because i downloaded half the playstore (not literally), but at the end of the day, it's my gaming phone so i use it for games.

it's not just about this small poll with around 10 thousands participants . generally most of ppl who use a phone prefer to have a micro sd card because why not?

phone manufacturers tried to remove micro sd for one sole purpose that they could sell more flash storage themselves directly.

go find best of cameras out in the market and they all rely on micro sd or sd cards.and they are in need of high read and write speeds essentially ! so what's wrong about micro sd when it comes to a phone? well if there be micro sd they can never sell 512gb phones or hardly 256gb.

everyone will just grab 128gb and add sd based on his own need of capacity or speed. simple as that.

I had to clean out my files every 6 months or so. Fast forward to today and i see myself with 64gb of internal storage and 128gb expandable storage(microsd) - internal storage has ~36gb free and external ~45gb. I use my phone as a ps1 gaming station, a phone, a navigator, an mp3 player and have some native games onboard. If you do nothing but browse the web you should stick to simple phones like 150 euro android phones, leave the 600euro zone for power users with high end socs, flat screens, expandable storage and few year old cameras and the 1000euro phones for those who don't need expandable storage 1gpx cameras with telescopic functions.

ShubhamDeshmukh, 21 Feb 2021Though I agree that people are moving towards 128 GB becomi... moreThe phones with USB C 2.0 almost all came from microUSB 2.0.

And the storage is moving to faster as well as bigger at the same time. A quick example:

The 399€ Pixel 3a had 64 GB of eMMC 5.1 storage.
The 349€ Pixel 4a has 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage.

Xiaomi phones in the sub 200€ range are now using UFS 2.1 storage, like the Poco X3.

I remember when the iPhone 6s came out with the crazy fast NVMe storage, and Samsung was one of the few adopting UFS storage, betting on 2.1 to catch up.

I know where your worries are coming from, but luckily, the industry is moving in the right direction. Same as they finally use big A7x cores and big camera sensors like 1/2.0" on mid range and even low end phones. That was high end stuff a few years ago, and the lower end had to make do with 8 tiny A53 cores and 1/3.1" sensors with f/2.4 apertures.

when I bought my iPhone in 2016, it was available in 32 and 128 GB. I thought 64 GB would have been the best option but 32 was definitely too small so I went with 128 GB. I'm glad that I have it now because I can store a ton of apps and all my photos and videos from the last 4 1/2 years and only use 77 GB.
