Huawei P50 series will be the first to use Sony's 1" IMX800 sensor, rumor claims

The P40 series had 1/1.28" sensors. Samsung just announced a 1/1.12" sensor, this Sony sensor will be larger than both of them.

          They're gonna need to find a way to change aperture like old Samsungs. Otherwise focal plane would be too shallow. It would also be difficult to take pics in bright sunlight.

            I have a doubt, is 50MP Quad Bayer bayer 1 inch sensor and 12.5MP Regular Bayer 1 inch Sensor, the same size? 🤔

              Look at some "experts" here.

              If small cellphone sensor + softaware tricks were any near larger sensors, cameras makers would already have ditched larger sensors to be using 4/3 or smaller and bet on software.
              This would allow much lower costs, smaller cameras, smaller and lighter lenses. Lenses with longer FL like 1200mm without using teleconverters.

              But they do not. Because they know quality would be inferior. Otherwise companies like Sony would not have sensors that cost over $2300.

              Larger sensor is better at everything: noise, iso performance, DR, colours.

                [deleted post]DxO calls it dynamic range king. Anandtech calls it unbeatable DR in low lights. You in the other hand, hard to swallow it because its not Sony.

                Go google P40 Pro vs Fuji. Its on the top link. Look at the samples how it can achieve 15 stops of dynamic range. He even put a sample of A7Siii image. Of course certain things as details, lens quality, were not on par with the bigger camera because of hardware limitation. But by not accepting computational because Xperia never do it?

                  I hope Huawei succeed in this plan because I want to see alternatives being offered from more competitors not relying on duopoly (Apple and Google) when it comes to mobile operating system.

                  Competition coming from different countries is good for us consumers.

                    Some kind of coating to the sensor itself instead of a filter.

                                Someone here is reading too much promo stuff.
                                You should not believe what Apple and Samsung say.
                                Like Samsung say exynos of S8 or S9 was able to record 4K@120. Obviously not true, otherwise 8K@30 was possible as well.

Sony's expertise in its stand-alone cameras does not get automatically transferred to its smartphones. Sony's smartphone-based cameras are rather mediocre, not quite measured up to the standard set by other smartphone brands.

                                    Anyway, sensors are usually RGGB because it is how our eyes are.

                                    RYYB catches more light than RGGB, at cost of colour accuracy.
                                    CYGM (cyan, yellow, green, magenta) increases DR, at cost of colour accuracy as well.

                                    For cameras, looks like RGBE (red, green, blue , emerald [actually cyan]) would give better colours. But probably has any downsides like other.

                                        Anonymous, 25 Feb 2021How does Quad Bayer Affect large sensor apart from regular onebecause quad bayers are fully inferior to real high megapixel bayers, its just a marketing stunt for high megapixels. megapixel race shouldn't have existed because all the high mps we know today are just nona bayers and quad bayers. there's no real bayers that exist at those numbers, even this gn2 sensor, it still has a quad bayer filter, it still can't match a real 50 megapixel bayer (with no 12mp output bs)
