Huawei P50 series will be the first to use Sony's 1" IMX800 sensor, rumor claims

25 February 2021
The P40 series had 1/1.28" sensors. Samsung just announced a 1/1.12" sensor, this Sony sensor will be larger than both of them.

All what I care about in the upcoming P50 is the zoom Zoom ZOOOM! I'll be 200x happier if it comes with that same magical number

Anonymous, 25 Feb 2021Dynamic Range of cellphones cannot even reach 9 for photos.... moreThe Full Frame figures themselves are exaggerated, as they count the SNR at 1, instead of at 2. Plus, those are for RAW, at base ISO. Btw, the 1/2.3" sensors on smartphones, according to DXO are capable of about 11.8 stops, which was for the 5 year old sensor tech. And all these figures are for unprocessed RAW. New sensors on iPhones, S21 ultra and few other can produce 12-bit RAW from HDR and can do 14-stops.

The 9-stops of dynamic range for smartphones was for 8-bit video, for much older sensors and no HDR10 or any HDR feature for video. Modern smartphone video, especially 10-bit and multiftame 8-bit like on the older iPhones, is well over 10-stops, and almost upto 12 stops. Btw old DSLRs also offered around 9 stops of video dynamic range, so that figure wasn't bad, for earlier smartphones.

Vlad, 25 Feb 2021Such a good sensor wasted on a shitty brand of phones. I gu... more1) Sony Semicon has autonomy to sell what they want. Same way Samsung Display sold to Oppo and Sony better screens than used by s20 series. Or Samsung selling Isocell GN2 to Xiaomi while keep inferior HM3 for own phones. If one company decides to use micro 4/3 sensor on cellphone, sony sells the sensor.

          2) Sony probably does not sell more than 1,5 million flagships yearly. The extra cost of larger 1" sensor would demand way more sales to recover the investment. Just now they are about to eliminate the money loss with mobile, losses that happen since Z series.

          3) As you increase size, speed decreases. Unless you use very expensive tech like new Alpha 1 that would be merge of ADC (used for fast readout of 1ii) and DRAM ( used by XZ Premium). Both together are too expensive.

There are tons of things Sony could bring to Xperia. But sales are not enough to get money back.
Sony has patent for underscreen camera since 2012. Patent for wireless changing using NFC since 2017. They have played with flex oled for many years ( at least 5).
If they were making as much money as Samsung/Apple, those things would have been here for years already.

I wonder if we will get a phone with Full frame sensor in next few years. That will probably come as attachment to the phone than be built in with sensor and optics. Phone can provide the computational smarts to the awesome hardware :-)

I am guessing the Smartphones would have more dynamic range, though their details would be lacking. Also, they have too much of artificial sharpening.
The plastic lenses may be one of limitations. I am guessing there would be a lot more reading for the extra detail in an ILC camera vs a smartphone one, with the same MP count.

I wouldn't hold my breath on this 1" sensor since this is still a Quad Bayer sensor in the first place and today's smartphone is all about computational photography. I'll just wait for the phone to be officially announced and had a proper review before I make my own verdict.
