Google, Facebook and others are more authoritarian and powerful than most countries today.
Aren't you familiar with current affairs? Maybe you are yet another guy br@inwashed by listening to western media/propoganda outlets.

Only someone really confused or a Chinese trollie would argue that Google and Amazon, and especially Apple, are more dangerous than an authoritarian government. Google wants to sell you stuff. Authoritarian governments want to control what you say and do. It's hard to believe that you can't figure out which is more dangerous. But my guess is that you can...

Is that why they pay millions of dollars in fines and lawsuits related to privacy and data theft almost every week? It's the most fined company in the history for a reason.

Google is more of a threat than Chinese servers. People who think Google, Facebook & Apple can be relied upon with your data while Chinese can't need to stop smoking the Mj. These are the most clueless people on the planet.

Google listens to a keyword, it anonymizes data and it's generally well-regulated in this respect (not so in search, which is indeed a problem). These are truly useful devices.
I'd worry much more about a phone, which travels with you and tracks where you are, who you communicate with, and what you watch or browse. Especially if it's a Chinese brand that stores data in China, where regulations are opaque and legal challenges iffy.

A watch like Garmin is very accurate for running, cycling or hiking, even under load. It's pretty close to a chest strap (I use both). Garmin sucks at sleep tracking. Fitbit is great at sleep tracking, the best in the business, but it sucks at keeping up with HR under load. Apple Watch is actually great, very accurate, but it lasts for only about a day, day and a half. There is no Chinese brand that I am aware of that is accurate, even Amazefit is bad under load.

IComment , 17 Mar 2021I thought you are using cellphone and internet...There are levels to privacy.

One can use Internet and smartphone and tweak a few things inside to preserve Atleast 90% and above privacy levels.

Inviting a Google Home nest inside your home is literally the equivalent of handing over your whole personal life to Google. With the amount of data they'll have on you in a year or a decade, They Own your @$$ on levels you can't imagine.

Literally all it does is save you the trouble to reach in your pocket to grab your phone (don't bring up fitness tracking, the data they provide is not accurate enough to really matter)...no amount of ads and people's comments will change my mind, yet here I am with one on my hand - got it as a gift, I find uses for it but without question I call it a gimmick at best.

The issue with devices like this however is that it's literally online - how many times do we need to see articles of people's activities in bed "accidentally being recorded", or other information leaks? The technology is indeed great and I can see how it can be useful, but until I see an option for on-premise data that is not actually leaving my own storage until I specifically say it can - they are not to be trusted in my eyes.

We packed off Virgin Media's TV package a couple of months ago and bought a couple of Chromecast with Google TV remotes, and upped our speakers to the newer Nest speakers.

Integration for my home is perfect, whereas my father uses Alexa.

We have a Nest Hub Max in the kitchen so the wife can video chat her folks while she cooks all sorts of stuff (some good, some not so good). 2 Google Home's and 2 Nest mini's in various rooms. Like the other person said, once you utilize them to your advantage they make certain situations better.
What I really like is that they are so easy to use my 6 year old can speak to it and get consistent results, even when I'm not sure what he's asking Google will display what he's requested.

Anonymous, 16 Mar 2021Anything tracking is a better way to describe what they do. Google Nest is great and I am willing to let it track since it's useful. It's not the Chinese CP, it's a private company and it provides a useful service. As long as this part is well regulated and there are thousands of lawyers waiting for it to slip, I am fine with it.

But the likes of Google, Amazon, Facebook and Twitter should be regulated as utility companies, and broken up so that they are no longer vertically integrated monopolies. The censorship they are fast imposing on all of us is truly scary.

In the morning it wakes me up and greet with the weather forecast and road conditions , telling me if there is delay and once even warned me about a road closure I wasn't even aware of, during the day act as a smart speaker showing family pictures, and playing music when asked , in the evening it plays white/brown noise for a set time helping me sleep. The screen is amazing for it's price and the "ambient-EQ" sensor match the brightness and colour temperature much like iphones and found in much much more expensive and dumber digital picture frames.
The second was kept in the open space kitchen used also for checking youtube video recipies and as interphone to broadcast upstairs that dinner is ready, now it also stands on my wife nightable because she's became jealous and she also use it at nightime to quickly check the external cameras if she hear some noise from outside .
In the last year+ it became essential to play white noises and lullabies for our newborn and now bedtime stories, this is why we need a third now.
It may not be essential but once you learn how to use it and automate your house it's terribly useful, also it's dead cheap compared to the sum of it's parts.
