Asus Zenfone 8 to come in three variants, Mini will sport 5.9-inch OLED panel

18 March 2021
A compact Android flagship from Asus is on the way.

Sort by:

5.9 inch with 0.2inch notch will do 5.7 fullscreen, and still reasonable to be considered as mini phone these days. Samsung s8-s9 has 5.8 with extra 0.2 for cameras. If curved stepped aside, those two would've 6.2 inch, but thanx to curved it got little less in dimension.

Me and my self are looking forward to consider this mini from Asus as daily driver. As Compact matters a lot to mine, yet, with speculated specs will add some confidence to go for.

      There's NOTHING "Mini" about a 6" screen.
I don't know who Asus thinks will buy this, but it surely won't be those of us who want normally sized phones, similar to the iPhone 12 Mini or to Sony's old Compact line.

Fuck bluetooth headsets i will never going to pay 120 euro for a decent pair of earphones. Because everthing less sounds also alot worse. Why should i buy BT earphones if i have 6 quality wired earphones. That don't need to be charged after 6+ hours. They refuse to build headphone jacks in de high-end devices, but they build one in mid-end/low-end devices. Doesn't make totally sense.

I do not know nothing about their phone support, according to you, it is far better.

I kept an eye on ASUS for a while. I will give them a try if they dont screw up the 8 Mini. (By not screwing up I mean a good camera and decent battery life with Qi charging and a sane price.)

Even OnePlus is no longer as developer friendly as it used to be. Your best chance of getting great support for custom android is with either Asus or Xiaomi phones. With the exception of ROG 5, all Asus phones are built like tank, and have great support in Custom Rom community. Xioami offers great hardware for the price.

I used a Mi Pad (1) for a very long time, I loved it. But there were no updates lately, so I decided to upgrade it with custom rom. Flashing was okay and I could step up a few main versions on the Android ladder, so I could run some newer features and newer apps that required android 7+.
The other device was a CUBE Hi10Pro, that came rooted out of the box, but with stock rom my banking app (and some other I already not remember) told me goodbye.
After that I bought a newer Lenovo 7" tablet (not chinese import) and before root there was no problem with apps, after root I could not log in to the banking app. So this one also had to go. At the moment I use a Huawei Media Pad T5 as main tablet, it finally has all the features I needed out of the box, so there was no need to root it, all the apps working fine.

The last phone I installed custom rom was the poor old SGS1. As you stated, on an old hw like that custom roms did miracles. No need to mention, banking app did not work on it because of root error.

I did not own Oneplus or Asus phones yet. But for phones like Samsung (S10e at the moment) rooting will void your warranty for sure. And in terms of hardware I do care about warranty.

What do you think of this?

B52, 23 Mar 2021Did not know about root cloak, seems like a useful thing. ... moreI don't know what phone you are using, but on my OnePlus, rooting doesn't void warranty.

I am using stock ROM. By rooting, I have debloated it further and have all the goodies that rooting can unlock.
These days there is no need for custom ROMS. Custom ROMS used to be great on older hardware with poor specs or heavy ROM like miui. These days, rooting alone is sufficient.

May I ask which phone you have and which specific feature you are getting in custom ROM that isn't there on stock?

However, my banking app did not work either on rooted stock rom nor custom rom. I tried it on multiple devices, "Your device is rooted, app will not work" error message every time. But it works fine with untouched stock rom.

Okay, I did not try root cloak or magisk... But when you buy a 500+ eur phone, istallation of a custom rom (which means you automatically loose your warranty as well on day 1) to make that phone usable is not acceptible.

Root cloak or using Magisk, one can easily fool banking apps into thinking device isn't rooted.
Looks like you have zero experience using rooting.
