Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra will feature Samsung’s ISOCELL GN2 camera sensor

24 March 2021
This is Samsung's largest sensor to date measuring at 1/1.12” in size.

Does anybody know how to convert the “1/1.12” diagonal size into LxW dimensions? For visual size comparison to other sensors but I can’t find the formula :(

Certified Gamer, 24 Mar 2021Damn 4K @ 120fps now that is coolAny sensor capable of doing 8K@30 can also do 4K@120.

But not all OEMs have interest in having this option.
In 2020 only Asus and Sony decided to offer.
But v60 and s20u have all requirements to do same.

Anonymous, 24 Mar 2021Hope it's a 10x optical zoom, otherwise I will go with... moreIt's 5x telephoto lens, though the sensor behind it is considerably larger than either one of S21U's two telephoto camera.

MY NEXT PHONE (if it's ever launched globally)

Smartphone makers need to work together to circumvent the limitations (1/4--1/2 resolution, over 50% light loss) of the Bayer Pattern, and issues (moire, false colour etc) therewith. It cam quite easily be solved, but nobody should own the patent alone, because it will become another a RED illrgally patent monopoly.

Samath N8 808 owner, 24 Mar 2021I think this should be one amazing sensor. Although, I&#... moreQB sensors suffer from artifacts and speckly noises only when used in full resolution mode, and even those artifacts can be mitigated greatly with an aid of mature image processing (e.g. super res stacking, smarter demosaicing etc). And are you making your claims on 1.6µm binned pixel (like the colour quality and noise levels part) after comparing the raw images from both sensors?

Samath N8 808 owner, 24 Mar 2021I think this should be one amazing sensor. Although, I&#... moreI do agree with you. Quad Bayer pixel binning does show its magic in low light condition, I really cannot deny that. But when it comes to realistic detail and colour, I'm not sure if it's better than a native RGB sensor. The fact that even a 2013 Nokia Lumia 1020 and a 2015 Microsoft Lumia 950/950 XL can still produce much better true-to-life detail and colour than modern smartphone cameras of today really does show that there is still some disadvantage with Quad Bayer pixel binning. To me, it's down to the photo processing software algorithm. The hardware is already decent enough, excellent I can even say.

Although, I&#... moreHigh Res Quad bayer are very useful for intermediate zoom if Super Res Fusion algorythm used. P40/ Mate 40 at 35mm, 50mm or even at 70mm produce very high quality image without the needs of dedicated optical lens on that particular FL (it even beat others that use it). You have to pixel peep very hard to identify the minimal loss of details.

Although, I&#... morein binned mode, there shouldn't be any artifacts beyond the typical Bayer issues (e.g. aliasing). It basically is a bayer sensor in low MP mode. In the high MP mode, it gets a very irregular pattern, that lead to worms as in all irregular pattern (like X-Trans too)

Samath N8 808 owner, 24 Mar 2021I think this should be one amazing sensor. Although, I&#... moreIf you use a microscope to see the sensor, you are gonna see that for every 16 pixels, there is always two groups of green, one group of red and one group of blue together. Each group of 4 pixels. The signal of the 4 pixels is read out as 1 pixel. This is how it simulates larger pixel.

People wrongly think pixels of same colours are separated like bayer sensor and then move to get together. This does not happen. Green pixel always have 3 other green as neighbors (in case of quadbayer).

It is not worth using the full resolution. Gsmarena has said for many reviews there was zero gain compared to the low resolution mode.
There are phones that do not even offer 48MP, just 12.
