Have just been over to the forum on macrumours.com, looks like almost 50% of all subscribers (over 1000 already) have experienced chipping and scuffs. Here is solid proof this is not a minor or isolated incident.
Not having any allegiance to a phone brand (currently have htc, wife has gs3, previously had/used iphone 3,4,4s) i would say regardless of the brand or the price a brand new phone should be just that... BRAND NEW, if you bought a new car with chips on it, does the manufacturer try to convince you that you should put a case on it? or your looking at it on the wrong angles? c'mon man, no excuses there, QC should have ensured these phones never made it to retail sale.
I applaud apple for the entire iphone concept from 3 onward, its ease of use etc, but i'm a droid now, i like to tinker, i think ppl saying android is too hard to use are just too lazy or too ignorant.the choices from cheap $100 phones through to flagship models is great, there is a phone for everyone. People should buy a phone they like apple, android, wp8. Its not life's hardest decision! That said i dont appreciate the blatant marketing they have fed to consumers over the years. As a marketing graduate its an insult to a persons intelligence. If you stop and actually question their marketing ethos all actual benefits are so minute. No mention of real world features. Can anyone buying a new phone today apple or other say that their phone has greatly improved the overall quality of their lives? It would be sad if thats all you really had to live for?
Speaking of which i do feel sad for the poor souls camping out and lining up for a phone riddled with problems from day 1 yet being defended to the hilt by blindsided fans. amazing what can be looked over!

Capacitive touch was invented in early 60's by Denish engineer. Multi-touch and its gestures was never invented by Apple. It was invented by Fingerworks Company which was acquired by Apple in 2005 and after 2 years they launched iphone stating we invented multi-touch. Steve Jobs was great artist in cut-paste. They had requested multi-touch as their trademark and which was rejected by United States Patent and Trademark Office. Apple has always wanted a monopoly and thats why I hate Apple. Apple iboys are the world's most stupid person who don't know the reality and speaks bla bla bla.

waited inline from 5am, picked up two white 16gs shortly after it opened.
arived home to suprise gf and both have dents and scratches. took it back and they opened more brand new ones with same issue.
refund both.
wait for next batch ?

Plastic is very good material. Nothing wrong with plastic. And only the ignorant think there's just one kind of plastic. Even luxury cars use some plastic and they're now used in mission-critical applications like handguns, jet canopies, high-end impact resistant sunglasses, etc. In sports cars, the most expensive, the very best ones use plastic bodies (yes, those carbon fiber shells are carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer or carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic - CFRP ).
Very good plastic can resist scratches and dents better than aluminum or glass. And when they do scratch, the resin can be same-colored so the scratches won't be very visible.
In fact, the original iPhone was made of aluminum and PLASTIC, and the iPhone 3G was made almost entirely from a HARD PLASTIC material. These are the sturdiest iPhones ever built. Even today most of them still decent.
So nothing wrong with choosing plastic. Samsung chose well.
And what's the iPhone 4S/5 made of? Glass? Aluminum? These are not "exotic" material. Basically glass is processed sand. Aluminum is the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. So please stop pretending it's diamond and gold!
