hmm, when I buy a black ip5... I better demand for a sharpie marker, a paper folded map for iLost and confirmed by apple store to send me a coupon for a free bumper case [that cost only $1.00/10,000 pcs in bulk prices].
...anything else should be on the list of demands I should add?

Just cover it with otterbox( they might say that. But that will be no point of buying such an alumunium smartphone if u just cover it up. I just bought a samsung galaxy s3 because i was stuck with ios for 2 years ago. And thats enough for me. And its(s3) a amazing smartphone. Should have done this a long time ago

hmm,.. looks like plastic defeated aluminum. and apple will give away free protective casings to protect their precious phones from dents and scratches... and they are going to release iphone 5s to compensate for their ignorance... and the cycle continues...

You're all wrong. This is the "Stressed Edition". It's Apple's new design. Don't you pay more too when you buy a nice stressed pair of Levi's jeans? :)

Not a fanboy or hater, but I have a query with the third paragraph of the article. It claims that all anodized aluminum surfaces scuff easily. Is that accurate? Because I have been using a Nokia N8 for a couple months and there is not a single mark on the body. It has taken a couple falls and spent time with keys in my gym bag, there are small scratches on the glass however.

Very surprised to see this sort of thing on an iphone and it seems to have made the UK papers as well:

I was going to order the black one but I may hold fire just until this gets sorted. Has anyone on here got any personal experience of this problem?

It's just like when you buy an expensive watch, you are soooo careful not to scratch it that it drives you mad. And when you finally scratch it, it's a tragedy. But you get over it, and then you don't notice other scratches. The first one is always the hardest.
So, Apple took care of that for you, loyal customer. It comes with the first iScratch out of the box, and you don't have to panic that it will lose the value or look bad when you scratch it again, it's already damaged, so who cares, right?

Anonymous, 22 Sep 2012In fact, the original iPhone was made of aluminum and PLAST... moreso true, that 'cheap' plastic is the same polycarbonate used in most other high end devices.. go figure?
